Pumpkin Carving Contest

Postby The Teardrop Nanny » Wed Oct 11, 2006 1:39 pm

8) It's almost that time of year for the pumpkins to be put on display.
How about it Monsieur Madjack? Will we be having another carving contest this year?
Or did I miss the thread already about it? Let us know.

Here is a pic of the pumpkin I did last year. It is Puss-n-Boots.

I threw another pumpkin (I didn't get around to carving and was going bad) in our garden, and we got three little pumpkins in July from that one.

Iffin its cold out, leave it out, iffin its hot out bring it in.

If you have carved it it will last longer if you bring it in during the day, smear vaseline on where you cut it, wrap in cellophane and put in the fridge. Take it out at night and light it up.

I'll try to do one this year, but that's how I do mine now only a lot crappier:

I don't carve all of the way through; I just scrape into it, using a template.

The problem is that down here, you have to do it maybe 2, 3 days before Halloween at the most, or it totally molds up and disintegrates. There are supposedly ways to treat it so this doesn't happen, but none of them ever worked for me.

Man, one year, I think some of the kids contracted ANTHRAX from those rotting pumpkins.
Here we go again!

Pumpkin Fungi

Postby The Teardrop Nanny » Thu Oct 12, 2006 5:53 pm

8) The possibilities are endless....if no contest is held I'd still LOVE to see what people have carved for their household. You could post the carving on this thread before Halloween and if Jack decides to judge he can determine the cut off date for those who have to carve later due to heat and humidity. This year's high August temps and excessive rain brought the dreaded pumpkin fungus to the Midwest & East coast crops. About 20% are currently infected.

 You can't really see it (fungi) on the outside as it begins from the inside and rots its way out. When you go for a pumpkin to carve look for bright orange as yellow means it's not quite mature. If it has brown or grey specks on it it could be starting to decay.

Let the creations begin....
