AVG 7.1 Free is going away...

Postby mikeschn » Fri Nov 10, 2006 5:48 pm

A while back I asked about a free Anti-Virus program cause I was tired of paying for the one I was using. You guys recommended AVG Free, which I've been using ever since. It's been a wonderful program, and I deployed it on all my desktops, laptops, my daughters computers, my parents computers, etc...

Today I find out that AVG Free is going away Jan 15th, 2007. Sure you can upgrade for about $30 a computer... but I need something for for about 7 computers... $210...

Anyone have a better idea?

Mike...

Mike, I use Norton. I know you have to buy it but I've used it on 4 computers with no extra costs involved.
Apparently MacAfee has a freeware version available to download.

Try Avast It's free too, been using it for a couple of years (there abouts anyway) and it works at least as well as AVG.

All

I just pulled this off of their site:
GRISOFT is announcing a new version of the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. This new 7.5 version with improved performance and full compatibility with the latest Windows Vista version is available. Users that are using AVG Free 7.1 will be provided with a specific dialog, within the next few weeks, with the opportunity to choose the right option fulfilling their needs. AVG Free 7.1 version will be discontinued on 15th of Jan 2007.

I read it to mean that 7.1 will not be supported but 7.5 free version will be supported. Where does it say the freeware version is leaving?

I have been a user for a number of years, greatest stuff, and like Mike, I like that it does not bring your system to it's knees.

If it is leaving I will probably buy it, pay or free it is the best out there.

So it looks like I'm in for an education here. I did not realise that Norton was so unfriendly  It's all I've ever used. I'll be watching this thread with interest.

George,

This is what alarmed me...

AVG Free 7.1 version will be discontinued on 15th of Jan 2007.

Although they might be playing with words... based on this FAQ, 7.5 might be free...

471: I am using your AVG 7.1 Free Edition. Why is there a pop-up message appearing on my computer from time to time?

Grisoft is continuously improving its products and has released a new line of AVG solutions on October 2nd, 2006. Therefore, as an AVG 7.1 Free user, you now have several options on how to improve your current protection level. The pop up window leads you to information, where we describe in detail the new AVG 7.5 features that have more user benefits than the AVG
7.1 Free Edition you are currently using.
If you want to know more information about AVG 7.5 products and their features, please click on the orange button "Learn more about AVG 7.5 upgrade options". If you do desire to continue using our Free version product, the last link will help you to upgrade to the new 7.5 version of AVG Free Edition.

I'm using McAfee I am subscribing to it and pay every year. I installed it on 4 computers, 3 desktops (one now parted out) and my laptop. It automatically updates when you connect.

Try the Avast, it really does do at least as well as AVG. It can also run together with AVG. I have yet to get anything in my system (that I didn't put there) since I've been using it. It updates itself everyday.
It will tell you after 60 days I believe that you need a serial number. You just give it your email address and it will send one to you, paste it in and your done.

...used AVG for years...switched over to AVAST several months ago and find I prefer it to the AVG I was using...AVG updated daily as you directed...AVAST updates whenever booted and every few hours it checks for updates, which are issued as threats are found...in independent tests, AVAST was found to be better...when I first switched over and ran a couple of deep scans, AVAST found bit and pieces of various bugs that had been hiding in various backup places on the hard drive...in other words, it found stuff that AVG had not............

p.s. Norton is kinda like AOL...it works but there are much better alternatives out there.........MJ
