Help needed to make faux gas pump

Postby funomenal » Fri Jan 19, 2007 8:41 pm

Since there are so many creative types on this forum I decided to post this. I am in the midst of decorating my garage into a retro style garage.
Unfortunately, I don't have retro type money ($500 and up for a vintage pump). So how can I make a close facsimile?

I can buy a vintage Texaco circular sign for the top($14). But how to make the enclosure? Bondo and wood?

I can buy a used pump $13 on ebay but how about fabricating the rest?

Thanks for your ideas you creative artisans and artists  !!!!

How about carving the main body out of glued up layers of Styro SM? Then bondo or glass....

How about bendy ply and a poplar structure, epoxy coat and paint... for the top...shape something like basswood, carves/sands easily and is
relatively cheap, bondo to cover your problems....and ideally a glass globe for the top..$$$$$....doug

You might want to consider the foam and glass similar to the way Gaston did his trailer. Stack it up carve it out and glass over it.
A little paint and no one will know the difference.

This guy has a few on ebay... I've seen 'em go as cheap as $125. at times... Shipping is the bitch: http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZdot257QQhtZ-1

Making a wood replica is not that hard if you are good with a router... Then epoxy seal it and paint it. Although, a natural wood one sure would be coo!

I created this faux vintage gas pump from my water heater. It takes up less space and it was cheap. I bought spray paint and old pump and sign. Enjoy!

That may be the most creative idea for using something that all of us have, Iv'e ever seen. I'm already sketching out ideas for mine.
Thanks

Funomenal,
That is cool, for the longest time I have been wanting to paint up our 250 gallon propane tank to look like a yellow submarine.

P.S. you might have the longest burning tire fire but I bet we have the longest burning mulch fire, it has been 57 days and they are saying two more weeks at the earliest.

Trail of Tears-

Thanks. I can't wait to see your yellow submarine. It will sure be an attention getter. You have another ten years of burning mulch to catch up. Make sure they add some old tires to that fire.
