valves/rocker arms

valves/rocker arms

Postby Miriam C. » Mon Mar 05, 2007 5:41 pm

Stuff happened and I just now got to do the valve cover gasket. The rockers look ok for 170,000 miles but there is a lot of varnish. Any suggestions before I close it forever.

Dunno if your car requires it but, it would be a perfert time to adjust the valves.

 Thank you, I think. Ya know the difference between a parts changer and a real mechanic? I have a gurls idea of what adjusting the valves is. But since the parts house gave me the wrong one I have all night to read.

Truthfully it runs pretty quiet for an old car. I change the oil every 6000 miles or 6 months. It has no gunk and I can scrape the varnish with a finger nail. :D

Just a little experience for you. I would personally leave what's in there alone if it runs good and it's quiet. The best way to get that stuff off is kerosene "but" it's gonna run down in the engine and you stand a good chance of plugging something up with it. Put a gasket on it and let it be.

Miriam,
If your engine is running good with no valve train noise, I would button it up and live with it. That particular engine requires shims to adjust the valve lash, no adjusting screw. I'm not seeing much sludge build up on anything, looks like your consistant oil changes have paid off.

:D Thank you Keven.Buttoning it up now. Not that I wouldn't love to know how to do the valves but

I did ask at the auto parts store if they didn't just have a paint on cleaner. Wonder why not. there is no sludge just varnish. Kinda pretty huh.

Yeah, it actually looks really clean for having that many miles.

Miriam...there are some old tricks like running ATF in an engine to clean it out...but I'd highly recommend against it...the detergent formula in it will clean out your engine and a lot of the gunk is what is keeping it quiet...I've used ATF (automatic transmission fluid) to clean up really old funky engines and it will loosen up the stuck rings in them and help on the smoking...not a recommended treatment for newer engines in my opinion...but engines that are marginal out of the late 30's and 40's, you're out nothing to try it...I think your valve train looks great for that many miles on it...I've seen a whole lot worse, with lower mileage...Doug

At a quick glance I can't tell what car that is, but if it has a timing belt, I'd replace it. Belts aren't meant for more than 60k-75k miles. If it uses a chain, you're OK.

1994 1/2 Nissan Sentra. With a 1.6 (16d)

:D My first Question when I bought that car was "does it have a plastic timing chain or anything else. This one does not. It only gives the slightest when pushed. It is nice that it is right up there though. 8)

Don't provoke the DOHC gods. Button 'er up! You could end up doing much more harm than good trying to do cosmetic cleaning.

With that many miles, say thank you and keep doing the normal maintenance you are doing.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

 I really did button her up after Keven and Nightimes suggested it. It needed sealer on some corners so that is drying. I try to never tempt Murphy and I have no intention of junking my motor up with scrapings from a metal brush. ;)

Wasn't shure bout the Nissans, good thing somebody here knows more bout them than I do.

On my Hondas, I check/adjust the valves whenever I pop the valve cover off. They always like that, plus I've done it so many times, it doesn't take too long.
