I've a lot of negs about updating to Vista. All the computer gurus I know say don't do it.... wait till I need a new machine... when it comes pre-loaded, it is ok...

I have to still run some old dos financial programs, so I'm not even thinking about doing an update.

I've got in on my new laptop... so far, I am not impressed. I'm sure not going to put it on my other PC's any time soon.

I did the Vista beta. If you right click on the program you want to run you can tell it to run in Windows XP mode. I found it to work on lots of XP or older programs.

Yep Vista Basic will sorta run on 512 of RAM... But Vista Basic is bare-bones... doesn't even have the enhansed cool graphics they brag about. For that you have to upgrade to the full version or Ultimate... as in send more money to Bill Gates. These all require at least a GIG of RAM... and are happier with 2 GIGS! Ouch... So ya get a good deal on a new PC... then you have to spend $150. (or more) to upgrade to Vista... then spend another $300. for good RAM! Kinda nudges the price up a bit huh?

I know... I just did it. :o

yep, he bought the unit from Office Depot...after rebates, it was 289bucks...after I told him what he was gonna haveta do to make it run faster than his old P3 500mhz machine, he returned it and got his money back...after looking, you can't buy a new PC in the big box stores without Vista onit...what a rip...I am shopping refurbished machines on TigerDirect, to find one for him at present...

Madjack... Ya might want to check out newegg.com too... they still have some good deals with WinXP... They are by far my favoriter supplier... and maybe the best on the net. Read some of the thousands of testamonials! I like them a lot better than Tiger Direct. Plus I have to pay sales tax on TD stuff since they are in Miami.

Rainjer, The system compatibility wizard seems to have the option to run chosen programs in non Vista mode.

I'll have to try this.

So far, for the general uses I need, XP was more than enough for me.

Solid Works (3-D modeling) version 2007 SP 2 is not supported on Vista (yet).
This is the one program I reall need to get up and running. There are fixes and installation procedures but I haven't tried them.

Thanks for the input.

Ditto on NewEgg.... have bought computer and gps items from them... no complaints and I like one-stop shopping (and fast shipping)... I have looked at tiger direct on occasion, but could not find what I needed at the time.

Just bought the wife a new laptop (she is starting her own company :worship: ) from Dell. I had to jump up to a Lattitude D820 (Inspirons all have Vista) to get one with XP on it. I did not want to mess with vista the memory hog.

I saw the very similar computer to mine with XP at Walmart.

It was about the same price as mine was. I kinda wish I had seen it first.

Mine is an HP M7750N. Nice computer with 2 gig ram (partly for Vista no doubt) and lots of hard drive space.

I don't usually "dive head first" into technology. This time I almost hit the bottom. As time goes by, I'm sure it will get better, but right now I feel a lttle like a guinea pig.

I bought a new computer w/Vista on it and I don't like it either. Plus, It had WORD on it. I save file and tried to open the file on another computer that had XP on it. I couldn't w/o downloading some kind of coversion program (which did not download successfully). I'm stuck with a file that I can only open on my new home computer.

I planned on loading my old Powerpoint and Exel software on it. They ran on XP, hopefully they will w/Vista. Has anyone done that with Vista?
