For Strong Stomachs Only--Black Dahlia Murder

Postby Ira » Mon May 14, 2007 11:33 am

I bought a book last week and just DEVOURED it this past weekend, about the Black Dahlia Murder, still "unsolved."

I finished it in 2 days, and started reading it a SECOND time.

THIS MURDER WAS INTENSE AND I NEVER EVEN HEARD ABOUT IT!!!

For those of you who may be as ignorant about this as I was, it happened in 1947--a woman's nude body was found cleanly dissected in two. (Widthwise, not lengthwise--which would have REALLY made this thing sick!) There were OTHER mutilations to the body which add to the gore.

It's an intriguing trail of facts and rumors, insights into the seedy Hollywood life of the day, the mob, but most important:

Police, journalistic and political corruption.

FANTASTIC STUFF!!!

They made a movie that came out in the last year or so called "The Black Dahlia"--it was overshadowed by Hollywoodland (the Superman suicide story).

I wonder of the movie was based on the book? As usual I would probably prefer the book over the movie, although I think I'll sample both.

Thanks for the recommendation.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

Ira--

Rumor has it a prominent physician did the dirty deed. His son in now a local cop and is the one that has accused his father. There is just circumstantial evidence, and that is probably all there ever will be. Everyone of that era has passed away so the case will likely remain open forever.

Tony, there are a BUNCH of books on Elizabeth Short's murder. Here's the one I chose to read:

http://www.amazon.com/Black-Dahlia-File ... 054&sr=8-8

(Read the Publishers Weekly Review on this web page.)

The ones who wrote books that claim their fathers did it have been disproven in many ways. And the one who did the actual cutting AFTER she was dead was an abortionist, of whom the mob employed many.

A lot of facts have come out in the last few years, surpressed evidence and such, cover-ups, etc. And the theory in this book is Bugsy Siegel did it. The reason is so obtuse and unbelievable as to be nothing BUT believable. But it's the evidence as explained by some surviving investigators that leave little doubt as to what happened.

By the way--around the same time, the great Kirk Douglas may have been aware of and involved in the murder/disappearance of Jean Spangler, an actress, and the cast of players all come from the same groups running and controlling Hollywood then:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_Spangler

The mob did they wanted, they paid the police, and the politicians knew all about it. It was an MO repeated many times in Hollywood.

This isn't about conspiracy theories, and althought the book isn't exactly an "easy" read, trying to keep track of all of the names and dates and such, it is incredibly enlightening.

And depressing.

Also, the case has NEVER been closed, but the LAPD can never go into it-- because it was the LAPD in the first place that protected the murderers, and because all of those guys are dead anyway.

Well, I'm not obsessed with this yet--but I think I'll make it a hobby, an interest.

A lot cheaper than building a TD!

I'm telling you...

If I scanned and posted photos of the body in the book, I would be kicked off of here in no time. There are basically two photos.

If I get a PM from an admin saying it's okay, I'll do it asap. They're b&w, so it's not THAT bad...

But it's bad.

Ira,

How about a cross-country teardrop tour of mass murderer crime scenes? As in the movie Kalifornia(one of my cult classic favorites)
