I'm not a lawyer and it's not my favorite source for information, but
this may point you in the right direction. It will probably vary by state.
If it's your credit report you're concerned about, according to the FTC, a consumer reporting company can report most accurate negative information for seven years or the statute of limitations, whichever is longer. For closed accounts, they sometimes have a date that it's scheduled to continue on record. You may have to request each of the three CRCs to remove it.
