Candle Lantern

Postby Juneaudave » Fri Jul 06, 2007 8:39 am

Planning ahead, I've been thinking a bit lately about how a fella might take the chill off an insulated Tear safely and inexpensively. One of the things I have thought about was just using one or two small candle lanterns, like you use in small tents or packpacking. The other day, I ran across this "Candle Heater" and thought it was interesting. Not that I'll get one, but I'll bet it would do the trick in a small space. Candle Heater

What are the oxygen depletion and carbon monoxide implications of this device in the confines of a teardrop?

Point well taken...not to mention concerns over an open flame coming in contact with fabrics (which would be a bigger concern for me).

Dave I think that candle heater would work great. I know a lot people get overly paranoid about the carbon monoxide, but leave a vent or window open you be fine ( should have them open anyway, for fresh air ). I remember my folks had a 13' trailer and a 8' cabover camper we had a small propane lantern with a single mantle on the wall they worked great, but for a tear I think they be a bit too warm.

I don't think I would buy that candle heater for my Tear, I just don't think I will have a place to set it....But I was just intrigued by how much heat you could get out of a candle in a setup like that. You know, those little candle lanterns like you hang in a tent get surprizing warm. First time I used one, I reached up to grab it and snuff it out for the night; and burnt my hand a good one!!!

The Kandle Heeter is a pretty clever design, I like clever, and while one is outside about the fire, the top of the heeter could be heated by a candle or the camp fire then removed to be placed inside the TD cabin without the candle, hanging from a hook or even set on a trivet if you have a flat spot. There would be no oxigen depletion and the radiant heat would take the initial chill off.

I think I'll make one this weekend while it is 95 degrees and I am stuck at home, then this fall even if it doesn't work I'll have the psychological advantage of remembering a hot July day!

Now where should I hide them flowers?

I use a Candle Lantern inside my Tear a lot.

Of course you can't be an dummy about it.

It is , to a point an open flame and it does expel carbon dioxide. But then so do you. Mine is well secured above me and is strapped in so it doesn't fall. It hangs so it does not sit on a shelf. The windows are cracked and I've never had a problem.

I use a UCO lantern.

It is a very good Candle lantern. It requires a specific "dripless" candle to be burned in it. You can't burn Cheep-o candles in them either, which is where I think a lot of the CO2 comes from (smoke, burning crooked, , dripping wax exposing to much wick, cheep wicks etc)

However, I think its best function is to lessen the condensation more than to heat.

Happy Trails

MB Hamilton, sent me this one recently.... I'm reluctantly posting this due to the controversy surrounding the use of light bulbs as a heat source...

That would certain solve the CO and Oxygen problems. Now all we need is a good source of electricity!

$27.95 = high Labor?

Another thought...

Since we all changed our bulbs to CF's should we change back in the winter to help heat the house?
