Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Aquarium Stand

As I recall, there's a few fish tank enthusiasts here, and I wanted to share this here for suggestions/improvements on the design.

I've had my 55 gallon fish tank in storage for the past year, due to lack of space to set it up and enjoy it. Soon I'll have plenty of room for it and using a coffee table for it's stand simply won't cut it any more.

This is what Sketchup and about an hour of time came up with.

The red 'framing' is 1.5" Square tubing, the green top is 3/4" MDF, and the purple box on top is the outside measurements on the tank, 49"X14"x18".

I'll also add shelf board in the bottom areas to give me an area to store water and other supplies.

I'm open to any and all suggestions, I certainly want to avoid a potential disaster if someone sees one out in the open.

Could you countersink the mdf or put some kind of rail around outside just to keep tank in place in case of large dog, rowdy kids or over active fish? Only idea that occurs to me right now.

I'd make the top horizontal pieces one piece. If you piece it together, you can possibly stress the tank if they aren't perfectly level.

Oh now I see the MDF, that may take up any imperfections. You might want to seal it with paint or something. Water WILL get on it.

I have had a 120 gal. for the last 18 years on a stand that is made out of 2” x 1/8” angle made like you have drawn out, but without the center support or a top. Your tank is 2’ shorter so you should have no problem even without the center support.

Many miles and many tears. Times were hard but now they're changing.
You should know that I'm not afraid.
