Need input for purchase of older Jeep Cherokee. Looking at some 4.0 and 4.3 straight sixes. I really have no need for a 4wd but would like to know about gas mileage and maintainence/reliability of both types and both engines. Help would be appreciated.

I had a 1993 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0 inline 6. I recall it getting about 15mpg/20mpg city/hwy. I have driven Jeeps ever since buying my 1st one in 1992. My wife & my son also drive Jeeps (all Grand Cherokees now) but I really loved that '93, wish I still had it but my son flipped it when he was in high school. He came out with a small seatbelt abrasion but the Jeep was totalled.

I don't know about a 4.3 inine six but the 4.0L inline six is one of the most dependable engines built. It has been made longer than I can remember and will last forever. The mileage isn't the best and the 4wd does suck up some of the mileage. If you can find a 2wd the mileage would be better but I think it might be hard to find one. You know, 4wd and Jeep just kind of go together.

I had a 4wd '00 Cherokee with the 4.0 and auto.... liked it so much that I bought a new '05 Wrangler (Rubicon Unlimited) also with the 4.0 and auto. Don't recall what mileage I got with the Cherokee..... but the Wrangler gets around 14 in town and close to 19 on the road.... pulling the TD or not, same mileage. I kinda wish I'd kept the Cherokee to be totally honest! (although I really do like the Wrangler.... just sayen')

My mother-in-law use one as a mail jeep every day. Very few breakdowns with 250000+ miles.

Jeeps! Yeah baby!

I have been driving all kinds of Jeeps since 1980. I have owned 5 Jeep Cherokees and I will say that they are great vehicles. That 4.0 (242 ci) engine is a outstanding engine. I've owned automatics & 5 speeds.

I had a nice '06 Jeep Unlimited last year but traded for a '07 Ford Sport Track 4.6 V8. (Both vehicles can be seen in my album) The Unlimited was really nice but not big enough for what I needed.

But back to Cherokees. I currently have two. A 1999 & 2001. Both are autos. The 1999 has 165,000 and the 2001 has 115,000 miles.

Gas mileage is 15-20 mpg. I have never had a breakdown with ANY of my Cherokees. But I change oil often (4,000-4,500 miles) and I service the tranny every 30,000 religiously.

But take it from me, the Cherokee Sports are very good vehicles. NOT the Grand Cherokee......that's a different and unreliable critter.... (Apologies to Grand Cherokee owners....)

Like anything, if you take care of it, it'll last. I could go on and talk Jeeps for a while but I won't bore you. Like the other day in my '81 Scrambler........

I worked at the Kenosha Engine plant where the 4.0 liter engine was built. One of my fellow workers had a 2WD Jeep Comanche that was his daily driver. He had over 550K miles on it and the engine had never failed him and was never opened up. So...reliable? You bet!! Just as strong today as the day he bought it.

I also have owned Jeeps , I think the 4.0 Inline 6 is one of the best Eng. I ever owned. I don't know about the 4.3 V6, never had one.... since Chrysler Corp bought Jepp , they have really come up in the world... j.m.o.
