Back to Basics "Whirley Popper"

Postby Geron » Mon Aug 06, 2007 3:55 pm

It's not stainless steel and it's not a "Whirley Popper" Brand
But I found it at The Salvation Army Thrift store for

$3.99
Hey, But I'm really a smart dealer, I offered them 5 bucks and they took it!!

The first batch was delicious :applause: :applause:

It's a "Back to Basics", has no burnt on grease stains and looks like it might have been use maybe twice (once by me!!).

Dat Dude is da pits to clean up!!

I picked up an aluminum one at a yard sale for 10 cents two years ago. I refused an offer of $10 for it at a annual campout about six months.

Wonderful popcorn popper, better'n Jiffy Pop any day of the week--leaves very few orphans when used properly.

You got a good deal.

My sister had one of those and she said the same about it being tough to clean.
Every Sunday afternoon as a kid the neighborhood kids knew there was going to be a huge kettle of popcorn served on our back porch. what a great memory! I love popcorn and have tried a number of methods to coax it from its shell but I always seem to return to the heavy pan on the stovetop.
I have made similar bargains at the SA, the $3 item leaves your wallet $5 light.

Enjoy it :)

You mean there's another way to make popcorn besides the Microwave and Jiffy-Pop?

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm--Jiffy-Pop!

Thanks for the info about the cleaning, now I won't bother getting one. That is our biggest problem, cleaning, we both hate to do it. I love to cook but I hate to clean, I'd rather NOT cook if it means that I can avoid the clean up. That's one thing nice about dutch ovens, the clean up is easy.

Good thing I have a nuke in the back of the tear, I'll stick to microwave popcorn. It's funny because sometimes I forget that it back there. It's not something you typically have when camping.

We only clean ours (Whirly-Pop) once in a while, after three or four uses. Then, it's just a wipe out with a paper towel. I had a popper that I inherited from my Grand-Dad 20-30-years old when I got it, and I had it for 20 years..never washed it!
If that troubles you folks..don't eat popcorn if I offer you some!!

That works for me
I do my DO's about the same way. A quick wipe with a brush with some very hot water. When I bought this one (whirley pop) at the Salvation Army it still had grease on the whirley blade. - - - I did clean it up well before "I" used.

I have to admit the popcorn was extremely good. Wife said it was better than movie popcorn.

U used Orville's corn and butter flavored oil. Then added some Promise margarine to the butter cup. Yeah, It'ud leave your hands greasy when you ate it. But, it was goooood!

A keeper I think.

You're not suppose to wash out your Whirly Pop- Just wipe it out with a paper towel like Steve said. It keeps the pot seasoned, just like a wok or cast iron.

When I got it it was nearly new. Had no patina.

I'm gonna patina it

When I get through with patinaing it it'll be worth several thousand dollars, I'm sure

Oh, I'm not gonna wash, clean or scrub it. Paper towel or DO brush.
Had no Idea there was such a learning curve to Whirly Birding :o

I just got one at a garage sale and am ready to go for
the patina myself

This hot weather I use mine on the 3 burner campstove in the outside kitchen on the deck.

Way to hot to heat up the gas range in the house.

doubt if the Al (Mine is thin) would work well over coals but its worth a try. That wuld definitely put a patina on it

Just used the whirley pop for the second time

UMM UMM good. No comparison to air pop and way beyond any Nuked pop I've had.

Wiped clean with a towel. Clean up no problem. I'm learning how to use it.

I was gonna use it to roast coffee but I'm afraid it will warp at those extended high temps. It's too good a popper to ruin

So I ordered an i Roast 2 from Sweet Maria's for roasting the coffee.

Smell that coffee roasting now.
