"Last Known Good Configuration"--XP Hell

Postby Ira » Sun Aug 12, 2007 2:35 pm

I can't take this crap any longer.

Ever since my kid got this HP laptop, my life has been an effin living NIGHTMARE.

He reboots, and gets the dreaded ugly b&w window with a bunch of choices on why the thing is screwed up. We click on the choice "Go to last safe configuration"...it appears to be rebooting okay, then we get an error:

0X.000006.

And it's frozen on his wallpaper and does nothing more.

THIS IS SUNDAY AND IS SUPPOSED TO BE MY DAY OF REST! I'VE HAD IT WITH THIS WINDOWS sh**! GONNA REINSTALL THE WHOLE CRAPPY OS SO I CAN GO THROUGH THIS NONSENSE AGAIN IN A FEW MONTHS!

Gates--I hate your guts.
Here we go again!

We booted off the CD, did the "Repair Mode" thingy, and we have 22 minutes to go.

It's only been an hour so far, so who can COMPLAIN!?

Oy--As a Mac guy, I can't believe people buy these things.

Ira, you might want to take that back if it is giving you that much trouble. It isn't normal to have that many problems with any computer.

My daughter sent her Gateway, Del and HP back. Sometimes you just get a bad computer..........thanks China.

Have you called tech support? A co-worker bought a new HP laptop and had problems with it right out of the box. He called tech support and they took control of the computer remotely. the tech support chick had to install "Hi-Jack This" to remove some malware that came on the computer.

Ira, either you have a bad computer or maybe you are trying to apply apple logic to windows and you're screwing it up worse. As bad as windows is xp really isn't as bad as some of the others like ME, 2000,or Millenium and apparently Vista. I have an error that shows up every time I close the internet, I just click ok and go on, it doesn't seem to affect anything. And occasionally the game I play on-line (Halo) hangs up and I have to restart but thats only once a week or so and since I leave it in the drive it might be at least partly my fault. Because I game play nearly every day I defrag every day and release my ip every couple of weeks that might help if your son is online a lot. :throw PC: I personally can't stand the way apples work because I learned windows first and apples OSs don't feel "natural" to me. :frustrated:

Ira, it's a karma thing. You strayed away from Apple to the dark side, and now you are reaping the harvest of the seeds you sowed.

Get your kid a PowerBook, recycle the HP, and soon things will return to the peace and harmony you once knew.

Remember the movie, "Lost Horizon?" All was perfect, until the people left Shangrila. Oh, the horror.

Remember, once one reaches computer enlightenment, it is important not to stray away from the light. In other words, once one goes mac, one must never go back.

This is the whole point exactly--Windows SUCKS!!!

I'm trying to be a good father, but ever since he asked for this thing, I'm looking at him and this PC with total disdain and digust.

And I can't believe that PC users here can actually blame the BRAND, that it's an HP.

It's WINDOWS which is the problem.

And Bob, as far as Apples not seeming "natural" to you, at least we have an OS with enough sense and capability to give you alerts in POSTCRIPT FONTS!

For Christ's sake:

I look at these XP alerts and I feel like I'm back in 1982!!! It's like they're written with a CRAYON!!!

Flame suit on...
Jeez Ira...
I know you're a Windoze hater, but if you get this weirded out over XP, I'm a little worried about you getting on the road and trying to go "Crabin'...Cookin'…and CAMPIN'!!!"
I'm not sure problem solving is a Mac Users core competency, but it needs to be in a campers repertoire, IMHO

Remember Bill probably never did manage to:

"Forgive them Lord, for they know now what they do--or say."

I solved a problem 20 years by deciding to go Apple, and I haven't looked back since.

The rest of you remind me of the Hebrews, my people, who didn't recognize the TRUE lord when he came around.

Wait--maybe I should reword that, but you get the idea.

All of you PC users are going to rot in hell for not recognizing the true messiah--Apple.

Ira, So what was it that made you by a Windows PC?

Take it through tech support and if that doesn't work, take it back. They don't want unhappy customers any more than you want to be one.

I have a new HP (Desktop) with Vista and I'm wishing I stayed with XP. I suppose I can partition my HD and install XP . Then I can boot up either Vista or XP.

Don't stress out :? until you've contacted Tech support. Your problem seems to be somewhat out of the mainstream (so to speak). I know it's frustrating but let HP help you figure it out.

Ira, my biggest problem with apple was that STUPID triangle you had to click on, I don't know if they still have that but it bugged me so much I'd rather deal with windows  And thats saying alot because windows does suck!

25 years later I still have a bad taste in my mouth from the six months I was forced to use an Apple and whatever the frell that stupid email program with the trumpet logo on it was.

EVERY FRICKIN' TIME somebody else in the office PRINTED, I got "the bomb" on my screen and five seconds later I got rebooted.

I hated Mac and Apple then, and I hate them even more now.
I use a PC with Ubuntu Linux and my email is via Firefox.

I ended up on PC's because after years of mac's back in the 90's (last was a power pc 6225)I found I would see the Apple bomb MORE often than the blue screen on the PC my company provided - and I had more software options for the PC.

Yes, Microsoft copied Apple, instead of "Apple, option, escape" 3 fingered salute, Mr gates gave us "Control, Alt, Delete" to accomplish the same thing.

Unfortunately, the first PC I purchased had Windows ME. I took that computer back to Costco and they gave me another, it was better, but still bad. I upgraded it to XP, that made all the difference. That thing still runs pretty good - only had a bad ram module that took it down. kids still surf on it. Bottom line is that is was half the price of a same vintage MAC and it is still going strong 7 years later.

I bet, you kid goes to all sorts of web sites playing games. You need to have anti-virus, you have to scan for adware. Game sites are prime places to infect your computer. KIDS don't give a crap about maintaining their puter. In fact, a dead computer can be blessing as they can't spend so much time playing online.

KEY difference between Mac's & PC's is that one vendor makes the hardware and another makes the software. Hardware vendors load the machines up with a bunch of crap that they want you to buy or get a kickback from software vendors. Every PC has a different configuration of software and hardware (internal and external). Fankly it's amazing they work as well as they do. You can go down to the store and buy everything to build your own PC - can you do that with a MAC?

I suspect that if you could buy a PC from Microsoft with only Microsoft software on it it would be every bit as reliable as a Mac. However, if you could do that, man would there be a massive anti-trust suit. Mr. Jobs had to know way back when that if he licensed his software, a bunch of people would have screwed up his baby and he would have a hard time keeping it reliable.

The new mac's look intriguing, but I'm not in the market for a new computer. At least Apple got past all those crummy colored IMAC's.

I hope you get his PC fixed, they are not really evil boxes, just different

Once you get it fixed:
get
Adaware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware

Thanks Mark,
I composed a similar post on MS WORD and was going to post it, but it seemed like piling on.
Ira will come around one day and yes Ira:
All of you PC users are going to rot in hell for not recognizing the true messiah--Apple.

I may rot in hell...but I'm pretty sure it won't be for my choice in consumer electronics - or is that a religion for you :?
