How to get rid of Crickets.

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

How to get rid of Crickets.

Postby CPASPARKS » Mon Aug 13, 2007 10:26 am

We had a very wet summer in June and July here in North Texas. The crickets are coming into my office in droves to die.
Does anyone have an easy solution?

Postby CPASPARKS » Mon Aug 13, 2007 11:45 am

Ira,
I think I would just soon have lizards. At least I could shoot them with rat shot with my .22

Here in Ks. we have what is called hedge apples or crab apples. Big ugly green things. Crickets cant stand them. They were in my shop real bad & I put a hedge apple under my work bench & no more crickets. Throw the apple out after a week or so, they do rot.
The impossable just takes longer & cost more.

Frogs.

Or I can send you Jake--for some reason he finds crickets to be a tasty treat.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

Cricket season hasn't hit here, yet. We haven't had a nasty one in a few years. But when we do, they swarm by the millions.

First of all, spray your whole yard or use granuals. You want to build a wide barrier around the house.

Second, keep outside lights off during the season. They are drawn to lights. At shopping centers here, the crickets get so thick, you can't walk without crunching. Walls and sidewalks near shopping center lights turn black with a covering of live crickets.

You are going to get some in the house, no matter what, but if you treat the whole yard, and your neighbors do the same, you can minimize the problem.

Boy what a turn around that is. You want to get rid of them and in China they are good luck----hmmmmm--box em up and ship to China as an export. They sell them at all the pet stores here for food.
All youse guys have pests down south and up north here we buy them for pets and pet food. Go figure.

Up here we use the hedge apples (monkey balls) to keep spiders out of the house all winter. You pick the apple off the ground after it falls off AFTER the first frost. It doesn't spoil then. If you get it any other way it rots before spring.

My Grandpa was a western Kansas dirt-farmer. On his "diversified" farm (that's a modern term for what was then normal), he raised among other things about 400 layer hens. He stored his eggs in a cellar separate from the house. To keep the bugs down he always had the previously mentioned hedge apples but also leafy branches from black walnut trees.

Best,
Tom

Sounds like Osage Oranges to me. We call them 'monkey balls' too.

A lot of things seem to have an aversion to them.

We get those damn things 365 days a year!!! They get in everything that is dark and not opened up much. Ugly little harmless bugs, but they are mean looking and did I say ugly? 8)

The Cricket thing was new to me when I moved here. Of course when I moved here, it was the worst cricket seasons since I've lived here. It' has kinda started but it isn't that bad. The cat has found a couple and left the in front of our bedroom door.

You can let loose some Guinea Fowl. The Guinea eat lost of bugs, they will also chase off snakes. On the down side, they are about the stupidest birds in existence. Yeah, I know not really a viable solution for 90% of us (me included).
