Flashlight Fetish?

Postby asianflava » Tue Aug 14, 2007 7:41 am

"Flashlight Fetish" is what one of my instructor's wife accused him of having. I don't know why, but it seems like flashlights are a guy thing. I managed to gather up my flashlights the other day. I was kind of suprised how many I have. I have other lantern types and plastic jobs that aren't pictured.

The 2 6-cell lights are about 20years old. One is missing parts but it is easily restorable. The 3-cell was for my truck but it didn't fit in my new truck so I got the 4-cell. I inherited the 2-C cell light when I got a new toolbox from a guy who quit at work. The Mini-Mags were assembled from parts of brokens laying around work, I have 3 more at work. They all have LED replacement bulbs except for the blue one and the 2 black Minis.

Rocky, Are you sure you really want to start a fetish thread here? :oops:

Flash lights a fetish -- absolutely not. they are essential tools.

Give me a couple days and I'll round up a few of mine.

could be. I have the ones that I like the best. We have flashlights in every room in the house. I know of 3 in the tear. one on his side, one on my side and one in the galley.
My husband has oodles and oodles of flashlights. All sizes and types but now getting the LED replacements but keeping the old ones also.
I am getting the wind up ones for the tear and the car and the house.

I wouldn't call it a fetish,but a useful tool collection.
My list:
4 - pocket Maglights {in cars & throughout the house}
1 - 3 cell Maglight {wife's security/nightstick}
1 - prototype 4 LED police experimental Maglight {camper's Flashlight}
1 - Coast 3 watt LED tech light {wifes security}
1 - Coast 3 watt focusable LED tech light {my newest toy}
1 - Rayovac focusable work light, construction duty{ my apartments emergency light}
2 - Princeton tec pinch LED {on winter coat zippers}
1- Rayovac 6V spot light{camping,road emergency,whatever}

I am becoming a LED light fan. The 4 LED police experimental has batteries in from original after 4 years of camping use. LEDs rarey need bulb replacement. Just converted the wife's 3 cell Mag to LED,because she said it ate up batteries. Now has 3 watt high power single LED bulb. Far brighter then original bulb,but less battery drain.

I too am plagued by FFS (flashlight fetish syndrome). This is my latest acquisition. It has 118 LEDs.

SSchumacherCO,

I have a question about your light. I have a Maglite police issue LED protoype. It is 1 watt in power. It is switchable from 2-4 LEDs with no change in brightness,only a wider light pattern when on 4. My wife has a 3 watt,5 LED light ,and I have a 3 watt single LED focusable by the same company. Neither is brighter then the other. Hers throws a wide light pattern,and mine is adjustable from wide to spot,but either way it is not any brighter. It's my understanding in LED lights it's the wattage,not how many LEDs there are. Based on my experience, your light must be capable of throwing a 30' light pattern,and not be any brighter then the wattage of the LEDs. Or am I wrong,and is it extremely bright? Even with being a LED light ,that many LEDs would be a battery hog,or am I wrong there too? Just curious{before I spend money on one LOL}

You can never have too much (or too many) of a good thing. And if I didn't have all of those old flashlights where would I store all of the old dead batteries? Ed :applause: :applause:

I just got the light so I have no experience with battery usage. You may be on to something about the brightness though. I have another LED flashlight with 44 LEDs with two on positions. One turns on all the LEDs the other turns on only half. It seems just as bright on both settings, just wider as you say.

It may have something to do with the size of the light source. For example 2 LEDs produce twice as much light as 1. But you have also doubled the area of the source of the light. Thus reducing its brightness by half because that same light is spread over twice the area. Doubling the light of a single source point would seem brighter. On the other hand the center of the light beam should have an additive effect from the surrounding LEDs.

The 118 LED flashlight is bright but probably not 2.5 times brighter than the 44 LED flashlight as you would expect. I guess the advantage this light has is lighter weight, more compact size and more efficient use of battery.

Count me in, I like flashlights. My current favorites are produced by Surefire. They make some powerful lights. Their website is www.surefire.com
