PC Ordeal Continues--Webcam

Postby Ira » Sun Aug 19, 2007 9:39 am

Bought the younger kid a 6000 something Microsoft webcam (a hundred bucks!!!) because he's been doing some great Lego animations using the digital camera. I figured it was worth the investment because I'm such an encouraging, supportive father.

Plus, he can play with it in his room and leave me alone.

We do install, install works fine, then "Cannot detect device," or an alert to that matter. I switch USB ports, do it again, same thing. A few hours later, he does it again, the thing "mounts" (or whatever you want to call it), and then unmounts itself.

Anyone have any experience with this stuff? If I can't get it to permanently work today, guess I'll have to go to the dreaded CompUSA Return Line.

And we all know how nice THEY can be.
Here we go again!

Which one is it??
I think the first thing to try would be to uninstall then re-install the software.
That's usually where the problems are. If not that it could be a bad cable or connection point in the camera itself.

It's the Microsoft Lifecam VX 6000.

I'm sure he already knows this, but do I have to do an uninstall before doing another install? If so, would that be on the install disk that came with the cam, or is it part of XP? (Macs don't have typical uninstallers.)

Man, I'm getting sucked into this PC world whether I like it or not.

Start>control panel>add/remove programs. Find the program in the list, highlight it and hit un-install/remove.
It could also have an un-installer listed with the program in the program menu.

HOLY CRAP!!!

How the hell can it sell for 60 bucks elsewhere, plus another 20 rebate, and CompUSA has it for a HUNDRED!?

Thanks for the other info too. If I can get it to work today, I'll keep it and consider it a good lesson.

I don't buy anything from CompUSA , Staples, Best Buy or any of them, they are almost always over priced. You have to keep in mind that they are convenience stores and their prices reflect that.
The only time you can sometimes get a good deal there is when they run an item on sale and that's just to suck you into the store.
