LOWES is coming to town......

Postby Micro469 » Sat Nov 10, 2007 10:44 pm

Is this a good thing or bad??? They are putting two of them in my town here in Brampton, and another one up north in Newmarket..about 60 miles north of me. It's going right across the street from Home Depots'....should be interesting to see what that does to prices....especially since our dollars are so close.

:thinking:

They usually do that the Lowes closest to me was built right next to the Home Depot. Probably only 100yards between the 2 stores. all the other Lowes in town were built across the street from the HD stores.

Ours is the same things as Home Depot same prices also. I go to Lowes more then HD simply because it is easier to get to.

This is the analogy one friend made:

Home Depot = Wal-Mart
Lowes = Target

They both sell the same stuff, some are cheaper others are not. For example, when I built my shed, I bought the pressure treated lumber, osb, roofing felt at one place and the regular lumber, hardy panel, and shingles at the other. Since they are so close together, I was able to comparison shop and pick and choose where I bought my materials.

That is Great!

Around here, Lowes is Cleaner, better stocked. I have better luck with lumber from them. The only reason I go to HD, is it is on my way home and Lowes is 15min past my house.

I thought it might have some effect on the prices when HD went in next door to Lowes but it actually meant very little. I will sometimes do the comparison shopping depending on what I am looking for but I found it usually isn't worth my time.
There are some things that one or the other doesn't carry...the Kreg pocket hole jig for example can only be found at Lowes.... can't even get the screws for it at HD. :thinking: :roll:

We have 2 Lowes stores to choose from (3 if you count the one that's about 25 miles away) plus a Home Depot (again, 2 if you count the one 25 miles away) and we've probably spent about $20K combined in them over the past 12 months, remodeling an old farmhouse we bought after the hurricane - Probably $1500 of that $20K was spent in HD stores . . . . all the rest was at Lowes

Be glad you're getting a Lowes store near you . . . . if you have to pick between Lowes and HD, the Lowes is a far better choice. Comparing the electrical sections of both stores will give you an immediate idea of the difference between the two . . . . Lowes has more than twice as many different switches, plugs and sockets than HD does - You could fit HD's electrical section into the Lowes twice and still have room left over

Here it seems that service is better at Lowes (which is a shame HD used to be great) and as others posted earilier some prices are better and some aren't.

Here in Eureka...
Home Depot = Tony Stewart
Lowes = Jimmy Johnson
Local attempts to bring a Home Depot have been shot down or are stalled in the system. :thumbdown:

I'd love to see one built somewhere nearby to give our local buiding center a run for their money... Only because their current markups are at about 300% on most stuff. :?

We used to be surrounded by awesome lumber and hardware stores, home depot moved in and strangled 95% of them with lower prices. Once they were gone, HD prices soared. We have Lowes and we are getting one 3 mins. away. Seem to be cleaner and friendlier stores. however I'd rather pay a few bucks more and go to a real lumber store for lumber and plywood, the quality is just not there

Lowes came in and bought up all the Eagle Hardware stores that were very popular and clean, a high end store for sure with low prices. By habit I would continue to shop at the newly converted to Lowes stores and got very frustrated with the lack of adequate stock and customer service. Lowes b***es :lol: I now shop Home Depot exclusively unless by chance Lowes has an item Home Depot doesn't. Home Depot is building a new store 3 miles away and just opened another 8 miles away in the other direction. We also have a fine hardware & Lumber store called McLendons, more money but better than the other two in all aspects. :D Danny

Neither is a real lumber yard---try finding a stick in stock longer than 16 feet.

six of one, half dozen of the other......

Lowes and HD are across the street from each other.

We usually hit Lowes first, probably because they have been there longer and we are familiar with a lot of the folks that work there.

.... and besides, they have a hot dog lady who works out front on the weekends! Really one stop shopping! :lol: :lol:
