I got the same letter so before I sent them a check I needed to understand what they were selling, yes they do help the parks to stay open but if you wanted to stay overnight to camp with you membership that is not what you are paying for, it is only for day time visit. If that is all that you are seeking them that is a good deal. Just my humble feed back.

Years and years ago, when Theo. Roosevelt and Gifford Pinchot, two good friends got together and talked about forming the National/State parks system It was understood that these parks were not to be a Money making proposition.

The Park system was formed so that ALL could enjoy Public land.

These public lands are just that. And are unlike public buildings that you can just put a pad lock on and walk away from.

They STILL HAVE TO BE PATROLLED!

The only thing they are closing are the Cash Registers.

If a Park is loosing money now...think how much money it will loose with out any INCOME.

Stat Parks Create Commerce. The buying of goods in an area.

Last Fall we, TearJerkers Liberty Bell Chapter had a Fall Foliage Trip in New jersey.

We had 20 Trailers and about 30-33 people. Out camping fees were About $800, (some people stayed an extra day, Who knows.) Thats $800 to the New Jersey State Parks System.

BUT

We spent another $4500 in tolls, Gas, Groceries, Forgotten camping gear, lunch...stuff and a bunch went out to dinner Friday night.

That park, and the area for that weekend that Myself and other TearJerkers were there for brought the State of New Jersey over $5000.

To me, Closing Parks is Small thinking.

This is not a California Problem, It is a national problem.

If our elected "Weiner's" don't go camping thats one thing, but not seeing the BIG picture, then WE have a problem.

I just got through a Rally in New jersey..Hell I don't even live in New Jersey. But if its near you...It Affects You.

Parks for profit

Postby dreadcptflint » Mon Apr 28, 2008 11:51 am

I don't know if we are lucky in Washington state. Last year they decided to jack the price of admission to the parks in our area that were making a profit to pay for the ones that are not. (The services in our area quite frankly sucks, you can stay a week and be lucky to see a park ranger). The whole parks for profit thing really gets my goat.

Sorry to upset the apple wagon ... no one like to pay but then that is why we built or own camping trailers for several hundred you can stay at a 3 star motel or more for a B&B on the lake so yes prices are going up, but that is so on everything else too. Like $4 gas here.

In Calf. the governer is says if the budget is not met he will close many of our State parks. How much more will it cost for those fences around them and the army to keep people out would seem to outway it. But maybe he wants to sell the land to the oil companies for a profit. who knows.

But I simply brought up this as a voise and the more members of a non profit organiztion the louder the voise.
