Job Situation Update

Postby IndyTom » Sun Jun 01, 2008 12:07 am

I know that I have talked with several people here about the situation I was facing with my job. Essentially, my job has been eliminated, and I had about two months to find another position within the company, or become unemployed.

Well, I wanted to share with those whom I have talked to that I will be starting my new job Monday morning. It is a very different job from anything I have ever done before, but I am excited and my wife is relieved that the paycheck will continue.

Thanks everyone.

Tom

Good for you Tom...

What did you used to do, and what will you be doing starting Monday?

Mike,

I am a chemist by training, and have worked as a chemist for most of my career. I work for a major pharmaceutical company here in Indianapolis, and up till this point, I have been working in one of the raw materials testing laboratories. During this transitional time, I had decided I really wanted to move closer to the patient, as well as do something a little different if I could get the opportunity. I had the chance to interview with the group that assembles our injector-pen delivery devices. For patients that must use an injectable medication, the pen makes it vastly more convenient than carrying separate vials of med. and syringes etc.

The job that I interviewed for is in the QC lab, but all the testing is engineering type testing. There is no chemistry involved. That is being handled by another group. The testing that I will be responsible for overseeing will all be of an engineering nature. While I think of myself of something of an amateur engineer, (I can generally follow Andrew when he starts talking about some of the deeper subjects) I have never done any of it professionally. I am a little nervous, but also very excited.

I will also be responsible for lots of technical writing. I have done considerable tech writing in the last five years or so, I have never been the one that was responsible for the whole project. That is also exciting.

Of course, it will take me at least a month to work my way through all the policies and procedures governing this new area, and I won't be able to do any productive work until I do. But that is the nature of the pharma industry today.

Thanks for all the well wishes everyone. I stand constantly amazed at what a great community this group is.
