24 Hours of Lemans dominated by... diesels...

Postby caseydog » Thu Jun 05, 2008 1:24 pm

Looks like diesel power is destined to win for a second time at the 24 hour race this year. Here are the times for the first practice session, and six of the top ten spots are diesel powered cars (all the Peugeots and Audis are diesels).

1 Team Peugeot Total LAMY P. 3:22.222
2 Peugeot Sport Total MONTAGNY F. 3:26.641
3 Audi Sport North America BIELA F. 3:26.678
4 Team Peugeot Total GENE M. 3:27.248
5 Audi Sport Team Joest LUHR L. 3:28.359
6 Pescarolo Sport PRIMAT H. 3:33.939
7 Pescarolo Sport COLLARD E. 3:35.443
8 Team Oreca Matmut AYARI S. 3:36.264
9 Charouz Racing System MUCKE S. 3:36.426
10 Audi Sport North America CAPELLO R. 3:37.011

But at $4.79 a gallon, it's amazing anyone could afford to be running diesels!

I guess a 24 hours of LeMans would be pretty boring if they were running Prius's.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

Prius...that's not a car, that's a lunch box. When you stick your hand out the window, the car will turn.

I'm waiting for my diesels to come out... ;)

I used to think I was waiting for the Jetta TDI...

but now I'm thinking about the 2010 Forester Diesel. It should be out in about a year...

Of course I also want to see how GM does on their 150 MPG "Volt".

If all of this discussion is for naught because the oil bubble bursts before then, then I'll just get the diesel for the low end acceleration (torque). I can give you guys whiplash, no problem!!!

Diesel has been running about 15-20% more than Gas - but my mileage has been 20-30% higher than a comparable gassers
(and 50%better than my trade-in)
so I love my little diesel.
(and a Prius would have problems in Moab - no ground clearance)

One of the Peugeots went a bit too fast in practice...

That's gonna leave a mark. :o

I don't know if European diesel prices are higher than gasoline (petrol) prices. I didn't find a good answer when I tried to google it.

Another cool video -- one lap of Lemans in a Pescarolo-Judd. Listen to all the shifting...

Diesel in Germany is approx 1.468 euros per liter. If my currency conversion and math are correct, that works out to $8.61/gal. :?

And diesel is still cheaper than gas over there, but not by much.

If diesel was still cheaper than gas over here, diesels would be flying off the car lots...

But even with diesel at $4.99 and gas at $3.99, I am still thinking of getting one...

Henk is at Le Mans. He has been going for several years and is taking his teenage daughter this year. I told him to be sure and tell us all about it with pictures and details. He has been counting the days now for several months. I guess he is there now having a great time.

The Jetta gasser is 21/29

Current prices in the UK:

Standard gas - £1.22 per litre = £5.46 per UK gallon = $8.64 per US gallon

Diesel - £1.29 per litre = £5.86 per UK gallon = $9.28 per US gallon

i have two VW beetles...

'98 Gasser
'99 tdi

i get 30mpg with the gasser and 45mpg with the diesel...

when i figure it out per mile it's about $.13/mile for both of 'em based on current fuel prices.
