Ceramic cookers

Postby asianflava » Thu Aug 07, 2008 4:11 am

I'm thinking about getting a Kamado Kooker. I've also looked at the Big Green Egg. Does anyone have any experiences with these type of cookers?

I've always thought that they were quite spendy (I still do) but people I've talked to swear by them.

Yes - my friend has two of them and they work real nice. There is a forum for users (but for the life of me I can;t remember the URL - google it)

They cook real nice.

Kamado cookers, the best Bar-B-Que, I ever used
My sister and I went together and bought one for our dad, back in the mid sixties, he used it for the next 30 years, when he moved back to Georgia, I inherited it, I used it until we had an unfortunite accident that cracked the ceramic body and we decided it was unsafe to use but after it had served flawlessly for over forty years.....it was great
takes much less charcoal than a regular Bar-Be, open the vent and the chimney cap and you can turn the thing into a blast furnace.
Over the years, we have cooked Roasts, Turkeys, Fish, Chickens anything you would throw on a regular Bar-B-Que, does have a mild learning curve, but are great units. They are pricey but, quality rarely is.
What the heck the design has been in use for ever in Japan.

Don't buy a Kamado!! It's a cult! Kamado owners are a rabid bunch always trying to recruit new memebers to the cult! Oh wait a minute...they aren't any different that teardrop owners or cast iron addicts.

Before I got into cast iron cooking and teardrops I spent some time doing BBQ and hanging out on some BBQ groups. The owners of the Kamados absolutely loved them. I never heard anyone who actually owned one give it a bad rap. (The only criticism I heard was from folks who didn't own them.)

They are heavy though! It's not something you throw in the back of the truck and take with you camping.

Rocky,
Have you made a purchase?...
It'd be the frosting on the cake for the new home. 8)

I'm intrigued about them, but I'm planning on building a slow cooker when time warrants...

I looked at many options when trying to find a smoker. I looked at the BGE and others...i just couldnt warrant that much money! I ended up with a electric start gas vertical smoker from walmart and have loved every minute of it..AND i only spent $99 on it.

I had a hard time deciding on which one to get and what size to get. I finally settled on a XL BGE. I like the looks of the others (not green) but I got the BGE because there is a local dealer, support would be easier. I kept hemming ang hawing over the size but got the biggest one because I like the extra real estate when griling veggies.

I fired it up for the first time yesterday, just grilled some Brats to try it out. I want to smoke some pork next.

We went to Eggfest today. People were making all kinds of interesting things. Some of the things we tried were grilled brisket, pulled pork, all kinds of chicken, brie, pineapples, and bananas. I also won 4 tickets to a Rockies game with parking as a door prize.

Made some BBQ pork tonight. We had pulled pork sandwiches for dinner and a grilled pineapple for dessert.

I BBQ'd the pork butt for about 9 hours, I never had to add any coals to the Egg. I turned up the heat for the pineapple after I took the pork off and still didn't have to add coals. The "rub" on the pineapple is cinnamon and sugar. It didn't caramelized as well as it should have, I think the problem was that the egg was still set up for low and slow, the pineapple needs direct heat. I'm pretty happy with the results otherwise.

That's the next thing I want to try.

Believe me, after living in Central Texas for 10 years, I've had a brisket or two. That was one of the problems, for me anyway, everybody there did beef briskets, not many did pulled pork. A lot of them did porkloin but that isn't the same thing.
