need to replace a sander

Postby S.A.Mike » Tue Aug 12, 2008 10:48 am

My 1/4 sheet palm sander finally gave out. It was an older black & decker
Any advice on a replacement?
Thanks Mike

Get a random orbital sander. You'll never go back to a palm sander!

Any reputable brand will work.

What Mike said. My old palm sander was recently replaced by a randon orbital sander. It makes a TON of difference. Don't know how I survived this long without one.

Bosch random orbit. (3107DVS, there's a more palm-y thing too)

Get the vacuum attachment.

You'll never use a crappy sander again.

Mike are you using the hook and loop or stick on paper?

The 3107 is around $100 -- it's a handle-grip 5" with hook-n-loop attachment - I own one of these and it's a fantastic tool. Compared to anything craftsman/ryobi/b&d you'll be amazed at the difference. I can't compare it to makita/dewalt/portercable/etc as this was the first >$30 sander I've bought.

I like the hook and loop. I really like I can hook it easily to my dust collector. I've worn out 3 backing pads so far, I've used this thing alot.

Bosch also makes a 1295D that's cheaper - it's RO, but palm-grip if you don't want the handle.

I bought the Firestorm one from Lowes for about $35. I liked the handle grip and it works really well. Hook and loop for the paper. And it has a really long cord.

Hook and loop is the only way to go. I bought my Porter Cable many years ago, and it still runs like a champ!

Kind of a heads up on sanders. If you are doing a lot of epoxy sanding. Make sure you pull the pad and clean out the vanes on the dust removal system occasionally. You'll know when it's time, it'll start spitting chunks of epoxy dust. It will also restrict the material flowing into the cannister. Just what I've found. Doug

Good job,

Now go and sand something with it... (although it sounds like you already did!)

I have one of the Craftsman 5" random orbital sanders. Huge improvement over a 1/4 sheet vibrating sander. Hook-n-loop sand paper pads work great. I've used it for sanding wood and even drywall mud knockdown....worked great. Maybe won't last as long as the Porter Cable but at about $40 it was well worth it.

So what is the main difference between the vibrating palm sander and the random orbital one? I have a Dewalt palm and I like it alot. I've never used a random orbital before.
