Map Quest/Google Maps Question.

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Map Quest/Google Maps Question.

Postby len19070 » Wed Aug 13, 2008 5:21 pm

Does anyone know of a Map Quest type site where you don't need an "address" to get directions to a Place but you can put the Lat & Long in and get directions to that point?

I camp a lot of places that simply do not have an address. And if it doesn't have an address, no matter how well known it is you can't find directions.

Example..Whats the street address for Mt. Rushmore. Can't find it??

Thanks in advance.

Happy Trails

maps.google.com lets you type in all of that stuff

I typed in Mt Rushmore, and it popped up.

then I typed in 30 n 85 w and it popped up.

I'm getting ready to load just the program you want now--"Street Atlas USA" by Delorme

You can look by Lat, Lon. and it gives the readings of all locations of the pointer,

Ideal for laptops, desktops,GPS, and PDA's---says the paper.

Can use offline.

You can put Lat/Long into Google maps just fine. Here's an example:

You can also manually drag the start and end points around, and place new dragable middle points anywhere along the path. It's a useful feature for comparing the distance/time of alternate routes.

I saw a Google street view car when I was in Atlanta. About a week later, they turned on the street view for Atlanta.

Told my brother about the car and he told me his plan. He wants to follow it all over town, so that, everytime you rotate the street view, his car will be in all the pictures.

What does the vehicle look like? That's amazing. I can remember the first time many years ago I zoomed in on mapquest and I thought it was going to show my house -creeped me out - now it's for real, oh my.

You can pan the camera down and see the hood of the car that's filming. The one I looked at was Black  must be government

So far they haven't got street views of my town. Which is odd cause they have done the other 3 sides of Indianapolis

I noticed an antennea like shadow in one pic. It must have come by my house at least 6 months ago because of the car in the drive next door. I wonder if it's captured someone where they ought not have been? forever! haha ooops!

I wonder what light conditions they limit the camera recording to and I wonder how they advertise for that job, Needed - Neighborhood Cruiser.

I have looked at that on google maps... the street view helped out when I was going somewhere in another city and could see what the building would look like... .

FREAKY though.... my house shows the Jewel Box in the driveway, I can tell the picture was done sometime between Jan and April, cuz we had the ice storm and my neighbors tree is gone, and the Jewel Box went to another location about mid April.

Funny when I looked at something just yesterday ... the street view showed snow on the ground... I went straight for a couple of 'clicks' then it was sunny!
Some things are way over my head !! ...but it keeps me looking UP!

If that creeps you out, check this out. Go to this website, http://maps.live.com put in your address, then click "bird's eye". This was one of the tools we used to weed out several houses during our house hunt.

Here is a pic of the Google Street View cars. It's just a regular car with a camera on the roof.

DeLorme street maps. Typed in Mt. Rushmore, got map.

Cursor on point, N. Lat. 43 52.8152'
W. Lon. 103 27.5286'

New to me to use but the pointer has a continious lat/lon reading as you move it around any map.

OK...I'm going to kill so much time with this!
I'm cruising around my old hometown, and the house I grew up in now looks like every other house on the block. Whoever bought it took away all its charm! How depressing. :(

They must have photographed my house for StreetView last year in October just before the LCGII. My trailer is in the yard next to the driveway and is shiny from the polish job I did just before the trip. I'm just glad they took the photo after I got the yard mowed!
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.
