Another new stove fo my teardrop....(restored)

Postby rainjer » Sat Sep 06, 2008 6:52 pm

I picked up a Sears (Coleman made) 2 burner stove today for $5. It uses the same parts as the 413 series. The stove was made some time around 1965.

I have already washed and repainted the burner assembly and drip pan. I need to pick up some blue paint for the case.

BTW. I soaked the pump leather, added new gas and it fired right up.

What do you soak the pump leather in?

Just wondered cause I have an antique in the basement too!

Remove the pump. Take the pump cup and pull it back. This will open it up like an umbrella It may take some convincing to stay in this position but it will. Look for deep cracks in the leather. If none just take the "opened up" pump cup and submerge it in motor oil. It needs to soak at least an hour.

There are a couple of internet sites that give instructions on repair and rebuilding Coleman stoves and lanters. Here are two. There are more I believe.

I use a couple of old Coleman liquid fuel stove, one from the 40's and one from the 70's. Love those old stoves.

I got one like that but made by coleman in 1969 at a garage sale for five bucks about 5 years or so ago. Looks identical other than being painted Coleman green. It works pretty darn good. I did buy a propane converter for it at Wal Mart. Now it goes both ways for cooking

I got a coat of paint on the stove case last night. Not perfect but better than nothing. I still need to do the tank and the side wings but I will do them at a later date.

I also picked up this stove stand that I will use with the stove outside the galley. I need to make a minor repair on it before I can use it.

All my blue camp gear is now in the trailer. This is my temporary lower galley setup. I will try it like this to see if I like it before I decide to remake the cooler slide-out and cabinet.

Here is everything stowed for travel.

The only thing left for me to find is my blue and black lantern to match the stove.

E-bay...only 1 other bidder needs work, not like the real "premium" finds, but the fount needs a polish and the shade was great! I'll build a nice mahogany storage box for it. Doug

The black pieces are done. I just need to let the paint cure for a week and then put a coat of car wax on it to protect the paint.

Doug- I picked up a 242C at the local flea market over the summer but am having trouble finding a fuel cap for it. Otherwise it is in great shape. It polished up real nice and should look great with the Metzendorf. Any leads on where I can find that fuel cap?

Are you planning on using your lantern? If so, go to walmart or a sporting goods store and buy a new brass replacement cap. They are less than $4. If you are going to display it, I might have one I can send you. I have several I have replaced. You would need to strip the paint off and buff it.

The reason you want to replace the cap if you are using it is because the old 3 pc. cap is unsafe. It has a vent hole in the side of the cap. If you loosen the cap under pressure, gas sprays out the vent hole and could cause a flare up if you are around any type of open flame.

Thanks for the tip Jeremy. I didn't know walmart would have them. I went on the Coleman site and it said they didn't stock them so I assumed they were hard to come by. I'll let you know how I make out.

The new one's look like the one in my picture. The older ones have a slot screw in the the middle of the cap.

If you have any problems getting it going, go to this site. http://www.oldtownyucca.com/coleman/
