Motorcycle hit by flying elk - Sweden

Postby Classic Finn » Thu Sep 25, 2008 6:53 pm

An unusual traffic accident occurred on the E18 highway between Årjäng and Töcksfors in western Sweden late Thursday night when a motorcycle collided with an airborne elk.

A man and a woman in their twenties were riding the motorcycle at the time, following a long-haul truck.

Suddenly an elk rushed out into the road and the truck driver slammed on the brakes.

The driver of the motorcycle swerved to avoid hitting the truck, only to then collide with the elk which came flying through the air after having been hit by the truck.

Both the man and the woman were taken to hospital with serious internal injuries and fractures.

There was no report on the condition of the elk.

:o I'm glad I don't have to worry about flying elk in this part of the world!

Heard of flying fish. Hear of flying squirrels. I've even seen a Great white shark jump out of the water... Never seen a flying elk.

That's one of the reasons I don't ride a motorbike.... scary.

That's more in South Jersey. There are other things we have to worry about in North Jersey...nothing a flak jacket can't solve.

Unfortunately we have LOTS of flying deer here. They jump from higher elevations right next to the road and come flying into windshields. That is not even a "freak accident".
The deer even show up in towns. MO has way too many. The insurance costs are very high. If you hit a deer there is no deductible.

And some people don't want to hunt poor Bambi. Better they should start to starve to death and get mangled on the highway. It can be scarey driving on one of the highways after dark.

Flying Bucks of Missouri!

I would imagine the elk is poor condition too. :(

About 30 years ago that happened to me - except the deer jumped clean over the tiny road I was on and landed somewhere over wall alongside the road. This was at night, so all I saw was its legs and belly passing above me - I so, so nearly lost control and hit the wall, just from the shock.....

Yes, that's NOT what you expect to see in front of your windshield at night!
Glad the thing was athletically gifted and you were spared!
