Things that don't fit anywhere else...

a little advice needed

Postby rhltechie » Sat Sep 27, 2008 10:58 am

Hi All,

I got my hitch in the mail. Well, I was going to naturally put it on myself. After reading through the somewhat cryptic instructions and figuring out that my model did not fit with what they said it was on the page, but also figuring out it was another configuration on the page i set out to start the install.

well i have to remove a bolt that's been in the jeep body for as long as its been made...9 years or so. as you can imagine there is some serious rust and that bolt refuses to budge. i have a breaker bar, but I couldnt get the friggin thing to move at all. i have tried some liquid wrench on it which just created a big messy pool of oil on my carport floor but didnt help with the bolt. i have tapped on it trying to loosen the rust. I cant get it off!! :x

to make matters worse, a friend of mine just swore up and down that she could get it off, kind of like when you see someone trying to get the top of that jar of pickles and you say "gimme that". Well, she did get it to move i must say but not in a good way. the bolt looks to be sitting in crooked now! i can see some of the threads but it looks like what happens when you try to force a screw in crooked.

anyone have any advice?? I am really going to be bummed out if i have to take this thing to have it installed just cause i cant get this ^&!@@ screw out!

thanks,

mandy

There's a good chance she broke loose one of those welded in nut plates inside the frame. IIRC Jeep has a tube frame in the back with nut plates welded inside. If you break one loose about the only thing you can do is cut the head of the bolt off and punch the whole plate up in the frame then you'll need to use a wire to drop your bolt in from inside the frame.
Is this bolt on the bottom of the frame rail? Shoulda asked that first.
It's been a while since I've done a Jeep but I have had the same problem before.

Squirt some more penetrating oil on it and try tightening it back in. May have to do that a few times and it just might start coming loose.

Sawz-all will loosen that stubborn bolt.

LOL

I am not sure "loosen" is the word cutting it off!

I sprayed more oil on it and it seems like i got it back to where it was before...i tried to take it back out and its doing the same thing...its coming out crooked. after taking some oil in the eye and scraping my knuckles on a slipped attempt the sawzall is looking reeeeal good about right now.

Mandy, you might impose on a mechanic with some air tools.

Congratulations...

spraying it with some type of lube and working it both ways is better than just trying to back it out.
