Went to Atlanta this weekend..lack of gas was ridiculous...

Postby zelix » Tue Sep 30, 2008 2:34 pm

I was there over the weekend.

Went to the JapanFest. Which was great as always. Sapporo beer... gyu don... udon.. sushi... Seen a cool rock band Sinatra. good times... good times.

anyway, the gas stations were mainly closed down. If they get a gas truck to supply them they run out quickly. cost about $430/gallon. I had to wait for over an hour to get some gas to make it back home. Glad to be back home, pals.

This is why I don't cry about the price of gas over here. I feel bad for the people who have to deal with all that.

:? I bet I could get gas there if I had the right permits. Pure garbage! They have had enough time to re-rout gas. Goodness we got gas after Katrina faster than that from the Middle East to Florida.

Makes you wonder, with all the speculators ducking for cover, if they are sure where the gas is and where it is supposed to be. Maybe someone took a delivery they weren't intending to take.

Gas is still $3.14 in spite of another drop in oil.

Coming home this afternoon, I see gas made it as low as $3.46. That's a good deal here! But I see it's nowhere near as good as Miriam gets.

...gas here is around 3.55/gal...but that is a another thread...
...3 things I have noticed since the hurricanes came thru down here...
1) most stations have only reg unleaded...no mid or premium grade...supplies have been iffy at a few stations...

2) before the hurricanes, the gas was a blend of 15% ethanol/85% gas and my mileage had dropped 4mpg...now there is no ethanol blend and my mileage is back to 21+mpg...up from 17+mpg

3) CRS...don't remember what the third thing was :o  ;)

Just about all the gas around here is at least 10% ethanol. There is one place I know of that has signs saying that they sell "real gas" with NO Ethanol. They also sell crappy 85octane gas instead of 87. 87 Octane is considered Mid-grade.

I noticed that all the way to California and back. It really put a hurtin' on my gas mileage and I noticed that most of them don't advertise the octane rating. It sucks when you pay more for their "mid grade" gas that we normally get here as regular. Makes the signs along the highway just a tad deceptive!

see this from Wikipedia regarding octane at altitude:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rat ... variations
In the Rocky Mountain (high altitude) states, 85 octane is the minimum octane and 91 is the maximum octane available in fuel. The reason for this is that in higher-altitude areas, a typical combustion engine draws in less air per cycle due to the reduced density of the atmosphere. This directly translates to reduced absolute compression in the cylinder, therefore deterring knock. It is safe to fill up a car with a carburetor that normally takes 87 AKI fuel at sea level with 85 AKI fuel in the mountains, but at sea level the fuel may cause damage to the engine. A disadvantage to this strategy is that most turbocharged vehicles are unable to produce full power, even when using the "premium" 91 AKI fuel. In some east coast states, up to 94 AKI is available [1]. In parts of the Midwest (primarily Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois and Missouri) ethanol based E-85 fuel with 105 AKI is available [2].

Alchohol is an octane booster. This is an interesting article on octane boosters

that is certainly the fact! that's why ethanol E85 is a joke. I read an article about Brazil where they use a lot if it. There t costs about a 1/3 less, but you get 1/3 less mileage or something like that. It's a fair trade off if you get to pay less!

10%-15% is added here to lower emissions.

Here in Wisconsin, 10% ethanol and E85 are standard at most places, along with unleaded and premium. Unleaded and 10% ethanol are usually the same price or within a few cents of one another and E85 is always significantly cheaper. There is an ethanol plant less than a mile from our shop...don't get me started on that one, it won't be pretty!

I still can't get used to calling it "reguluar" unleaded...regular will always be leaded to me!

 Down to $3.12 here. Seems we have a glut. Wonder if Grace energy bought up all the gas......

I am gonna fill my truck for the gathering (sounds like a cult huh) now so there will be gas for them to ship to the other side of the river for the foot ball games.

You can thank me later. :R (just kidding)
