Need some Senior Citizen alarm help

Postby len19070 » Mon Oct 13, 2008 4:03 pm

I need some help here.

My parents, Dad 86 and Mom 84 need some kind of device that they can carry on there person to notify each other, a beeper as it were.

Dad is always out in the yard, garage, shed etc and Mom is always in the house.

Mom fell the other day and was down for a half hour until Dad came in for lunch.

I don't need anything that will call the Fire Department, Police, a service or an ambulance...just a beeper to notify that one needs the other.

Simple is the key word.

Does anyone know of such a device?

Thanks in advance.

Happy Trails

Why not just a 2 way radio?

Len, if a LifeAlert (which will call the cops, 911, etc.) is too much, how about a simple 2-way walkie talkie from Dicks Sporting Goods or Wal-mart, similar to what deer hunters would carry in the woods? Something short range, a couple miles, should cover what you want.

Hope this helps.

I'll second that. They are lightweight and have a pretty good range.

I can see the benefit of wearing something around your neck, like this... You're more inclined to have it on you when something happens.

This would not be for emergency use.

Dad is 86, and Mom is 84. Think LOW TECH. There still impressed when the light comes on in the Ref.

A 2 way radio would work IF they would carry it around with them. But I think it would really confuse my Mom.

I'm thinking of something small they could wear around there necks with just a button on it.

I really don't want anything that will notify anyone else. Other than each other.

We don't need the Fire Dept. Police or EMT's to help Mom pick up a plate she dropped.

If the one can "beep" the other and it is an emergency, then the other can dial 911.

thanks

how about a cordless phone with an intercom function? My motorola has one base station, 3 cordless phones. now not a simple button, but, press intercom and handset # (1,2,3) and it rings a different tone than the phone. pretty simple. Cordless phone has a belt clip and a speaker phone. also let them call 911

Senior citizen help

Postby M B Hamilton » Mon Oct 13, 2008 8:22 pm

Len,

I have some experience with the private use versions of the Life Alert/Alert One-type equipment. I am unaware of any system where everyone just gets to wear a pendant (call button). It seems someone always has to wear the "responder's" device (which can differentiate which call button sent the signal). Of course, if the concern is primarily your Mom being able to call your Dad such a setup would work.

Wireless phones with built in intercom perhaps will come the closest to something they are already familiar with (if they don't both have cell phones). It would just be a new function on their wireless phone - something they'd already be familiar with using and keeping charged.

Communicators like the Motorola Talkabouts are simple, but it's another piece of equipment thay'd have to remember to return to the charger base at night and then take with them again in the morning.

One person being able to talk to the other, rather than just a beeper, means that the responder doesn't have to go searching for the person that called. In the case of an emergency that's important.

I hope you can find something that fit's their (and your) needs. While it's a problem most of us get to face in one way or the other, personal circumstances make it a situation where there is no single answer.[/i]

I agree. When my sister and her partner had a business about 100 feet from their home, that's what they used to signal to each other or to ask a question. They used that system so that only one person had to be in the store at a time and the other could be working in the home. It worked great for them and had the added advantage of being able to call 911 if they needed to.

Len you might check this site for something useful.

Also you can call your hospital or visiting nurses business for ideas that are practical.

Nurse call systems are probably the way to go. I'm not sure of the range, you'd probably have to have a few of the units around the house and garage, shed etc, unless yu can find a system with a good range. You could have two pendants configured for the same system, and the sending unit configured to their home phone #. This also means you have to have have a phone in the garage, shed, etc, or maybe just a bell. When one of them needs help they push the button on their pendant , which dials the home phone and the bell, (bells) ring in the out buildings, and the phone inside the house, notifying the other person that their partner is in trouble.

Nah, that won't work, Your dad would be running into the house every fifteen minutes when someone calls the missus.....

Maybe a pendant hooked up to a transmitter hooked uo to a fire alarm bell?

Just to add another train of thought - how about something sonic? I'm thinking of something like a rape alarm that's really small and just puts out an ear-splitting noise. Of course you might have to tell them it's called something different!

I think they got discontinued over here, but you used to be able to buy lovely little air-powered foghorns about the size and shape of an asthma inhaler that might be a less offensive noise.
