Remember Josphine the Plumber

Postby Aaron Coffee » Fri Oct 24, 2008 2:46 pm

All of this talk about Joe the Plumber made me remember the character form the old Comet commercials, her name was Josephine the Plumber. Now any time I hear a reference to Joe the plumber I laugh. Mentioned it to a "kid" (mid twetnies) at work and just got a funny look, guess I'm just showing my age.
ANy other advertising mascots of yesteryear that anyone can think of?
If I could shut my brain off, I could save myself alot of time, money and effort.

In a slightly different vein, how about the old Dow Chemical slogan: BLTC--better living through chemicals. It took on a differenr meaning among certain segments of the population.

what about the crazy 'manicurist' who used to tell her clients about how wonderfully gentle Palmolive dishwashing liquid would be--and soften her customer's hands by soaking them in it prior to the manicure. I can *still* hear her saying "You're soaking in it right now!"
Wasn't that Hazel?

BTW--I referred to Sara Palin as 'the Anita Bryant of Alaska' and two of the people in the conversation were completely lost. They asked me, 'You meant Anita *Hill*, right?' They had never heard of Anita Bryant...or apparently seen the same era of Florida orange juice commecials that I grew up on. :o

That would be Kukla, Fran & Ollie.

Given that you mentioned Engineer Bill ("Red light! Green light") and Cal Worthington I gather you grew up in the LA area. How about:

Shari Lewis, Charlie Horse & Lamb Chop
Sheriff John & the Lunch Brigade
Chucko the Birthday Clown
Cisco Kid
Col. Bleep, Squeak the puppet and Scratch the cave man.
Tom Terrific
Hobo Kelly
Winky Dink and You
Romper Room
Sky King

It just occurred to me that some of these were national, not local. I doubt if Jimmy Buffet could have written "fan letters to Sky's niece Penny" unless it was available in Alabama.

What amazes me is Cal Worthington and Earl Scheib have cleaned up their acts and are still in business, though Scheib died in '92 and Worthington has scaled back his direct involvement with the dealership group.

Geesh... and the list goes on..
But can't forget the wonderful Annette Funicello (spell?) of the Famous Mousekateers, or Moosekateers...

Oh well, on to next gen....
