Visit to New York

Postby Creamcracker » Fri Jan 16, 2009 4:45 pm

My wife and I are thinking about a visit to New York City in May -- specifically the 17th May to the 21st May. The plan is to drive there from Virginia -- about 5 hours -- and then staying at a hotel in New Jersey but sufficiently close so as to be able to travel in by train/bus or whatever is available. Anyway I looked on line and really didn't find a hotel that jumped out at me -- there were a few possibilities in Newark or North Bergen.

Question 1 -- Anyone familiar enough with the area to suggest/recommend a place to stay?

Question 2 --Then I got to thinking -- is there a campsite close enough that would be near to a train station-- let's say a 30/40 minute train ride into New York City? Either way I don't think I want to drive into the city.

Any suggestions/observations welcome.

Thanks Philip

Think about finding a campground upstate and near the Hudson River. Trains run into the city along the river, it's a nice ride. We are about 125 miles north of NYC, and 20 minutes from the train station, 10 minutes from a campground, but that's a little farther out than you would want. Or also consider somewhere on the Connecticut coast, as a commuter train runs along the coast into the city. Our daughter takes it in from New Haven occasionally. But why would you want to go there anyway? Being a country boy I have no desire to go into the city, although I used to drive people in or pick them up to come up here. Amtrak runs along the east side of the Hudson. Bob

Phillip-

When we go and visit our daughter we try and stay at a La Quinta Inn. Generally we will stay at the one in Secaus(sic) NJ but found one in Manahattan

La Quinta Inn Manhattan
17 West 32nd Street
New York, NY 10001

The price (AARP rates about $98/night) If you are looking for cheaper - that is going to be very hard to do. You could also try camping with the TD - many state parks on Long Island and you can always take the LIRR train in.

If you need more info let me know.
