I can buy "fresh" vegetables any time of year, but they are not really fresh, and certainly not local. And, there is nothing like fresh local vegetables.

Here in North Texas, June is the month of fresh veggies.

In the last two hours, I just ate an incredible fresh peach (ripe in the first and second week of June here), some really amazingly sweet strawberries (fresh everywhere in June), and the best damn ear of corn you could ask for.

So, this is the "ode to fresh veggies" thread.

Anybody else out there in veggie heaven right now?

You know what I miss most? REAL CORN!! Up here all you can seem to get is "Peahes and cream" I love and want the real stuff... Bright YELLOW corn....Haven't seem to find it in years. I find the flavour much nicer than the weak P&C stuff.... :cry:

I had a peach tree at my last house, with the big yard, and got about 300 peaches per year off of it. I had to give most of them away, since that all got ripe over a two week period in June.

I love a good steak, but fresh - -and I mean really fresh -- fruits and vegetables are really hard to beat.

I harvested my first squash and zucchini from the back yard garden this week. My first cucumbers last week. I have been harvesting lettuce of several varieties for several weeks.

It looks like I am about two weeks away from my first tomatoes and about the same for the eggplant. With any luck I will be canning the first batch of pickles this weekend.

I hear ya Glenn! I like the locals that park their trailer and sell out by the swap meet..... they have beautiful , red tomatoes and great canteloupes ... .mm mm mm

Justa sittn' and awaitin' Tomaters Peppers Herbs. Next year I may do some raised bed gardening.

Yep! Goin to the farmers market today cause my tomato's, pepper's, zuchinni, cucumber's and sage, thyme, chives, and other herbs are still about a month, or so, away from harvest.

Yup, waiting for my maters to grow. I have lots of blooms and one the size of a jawbreaker growing away. I am still a couple of weeks out.

My wife has a little vegetable garden which really torments all the deer just outside the fence.

We've been eating the lettuce, collards, radishes and onions for several weeks. Been getting one or two tomatoes a day for the last couple of weeks, the banana peppers about the same. And potatoes we have been eating fresh potatoes for the at least 4 weeks now. We'll soon have more tomatoes than we can eat, as well as jalapenos, habaneros, and banana peppers. Should have some corn and beans before long too. All this in a 20 by 40 foot garden and with a huge herd of deer only inches away (7 foot fence seems to keep them out).

She also has several different herbs growing but seems we have them year round. And I cannot wait for the pecans to start falling..... :thumbsup:

I have been eating banana peppers from my garden for a few weeks. My first bell pepper had no taste -- too much rain, I think. My first jalepeño was kind of weak -- that I know is from too much water.

My basil and oregano are great. My rosemary plants have had powdery mildew issues.

Deer ate all our 'maters! We planted a communal garden at the in-laws in Dripping Springs. Its all fenced in, 'cept the dang ol' 'maters. They were in 5 gal. buckets right outside.
Everything's doing pretty good, but nothing is ready yet. Guess we have a brown thumb. We have been eating some really yummy fresh corn from HEB lately though. Can't get enough! I suppose they're local because they're pretty small due to the drought and all.

The corn is NOT local. Texas corn is cattle feed. It is nice looking, but no good for humans -- tough as cardboard.
