Is there any possibility in US to get some information about car if is known a WIN ???

I am going to buy in week time a Pontiac Grand Prix 1976 and would be very happy to find the history about him. I love that car already and car for me is a member of family, not an piece of metal and gum :)

That is a reason why I would like to find out something about my Pontiac.

If someone can help me - the WIN is - 2K57W6P164016

Thank you in advance :)

Dainite, go to carfax.com and enter in the VIN #. If there is any information about your vehicle it should be there.

Carfax start with 1981 vehicles.

Where is the car being purchased from? States? Which state?

As I understand it some countries retain ownership info that can be accessed by the new owner. I've heard this can be done in Germany and England for example, but have no direct experience with it. Maybe a member from there can shed more light on the subject. Not sure in Latvia, but it may be worth asking your licensing agency. Good luck in your search.

As rebapuck stated, Carfax is only good for '81 and up models. :(

In Latvia it is also possible about cars history in Latvia, bot not previous history outside Latvia. That car is not registered yet in Latvia.

In few days I hope I will be able to see the custom documents - may be through them I will find out exactly where from the car is coming :)

As I understood - it is coming from US - but I will try to find out more precisely - which state - may be then somebody will be able to help me :)

I feel like a detective :) :twisted:

Dainite, I was able to decode that VIN number:

2K57W6P164016

2 = Make (Pontiac)

K = Series (Grand Prix)

57 = Body Type (2-door Hardtop coupe)

W = Engine Code (455 V8 200 HP)

6 = Year (1976)

P = Assembly Plant (Pontiac, Michigan, USA)

164016 = Serial Number

A check of the VIN number shows that it is not stolen, but was sold as salvage due to a collision on 9/28/2006. This information is from "VIN Check" on the National Insurance Crime Bureau website:

https://www.nicb.org/cps/rde/xchg/nicb/ ... check.html

A vehicle is considered salvage or a total loss when the cost to repair exceeds the value of the vehicle. In America, this car has an average value of $800, so it would not require much damage to exceed it's value. But the damage could have been much more severe.

Good find Joe G :thumbsup:
I would be very careful in burying this, check under the car for any possible frame damage. Most of what you see can be repaired to look good, but if there was some serious damage underneth, I would pass on it. Remember, it most likely was shipped out of the US, because it would'nt be able to sell here.
If it itches. scratch it

My Nissan has a salvage title because ice fell on it and got the winshield, the hood and put a dent in the fender. Wasn't worth the fix so they paid me and I had it fixed. Still runs good just not worth the body work. A collectable is a different thing. :thumbsup:

Thanks to everybody for information - it was very helpful. Now I am sure that it is not stolen and can believe that to repair that car could be more expensive than 800 USD. It has a few damages.
There you can see some pictures of that. Please take into account, that it is very famous and exclusive car. It is 50th golden anniversary model of Pontiac and in that year 1976 - those cars were produced only 4807. Exept that car in Europe we could found only one - in Switzerland.

My older sister had that car. I had no idea it was that special. She says she bought it cause she liked the color. It broke down so many times that she sold it to the junk yard.
