Beautiful! It sure would be a nice ending if they do locate the owner (alive) they allow them to purchase it back for say the original payout plus a small interest fee.

It will probably go across the stage at Barrett-Jackson.

Samba.com has had a running debate about this one. My opinion is that the original owner, Michelle, was paid for the car and she bought another VW. A camper. Which is what she was turning the first one into when it was stolen. So, she got a good deal. And is out of the picture. I would like the restoration shop, which made the bus beautiful, to not take a financial hit.

 I completely agree IF the shop can prove they had no knowledge it was stolen when they got it. Was there a fake title involved? Or perhaps that is why it was being shipped overseas?

That 27-grand value estimate is pretty accurate. A 16-window VW bus will fetch 40K on a good day.

I would definitely want to give Allstate their money back for the bus -- but wouldn't hold my breath waiting. :(

Yeah, always did love these freaggin things and would love to have one. This is in my album. I posted it in a "dream car" thread a while ago.

I would have to agree as well. In fact I was wondering how many times this van has been bought and sold in the last 35 years or has it been unofficial in some garage all these years or sold with a fake title?

Could be an interesting story.

I see no reason the insurance company should profit from the orig owner's loss... I'm for the owner being able to buy it back at what the ins. co. paid them for it....

But the insurance company paid for it. They took the loss, until now.

They could very well give Michelle first dibs at buying it back, but certainly not at 1974 prices. Michelle got her camper.

As I understand it, it has a "clean" title. Obviously, the state of CA made an error on that one.

They took the loss because the camper had not been found.. but now it has... so, give it back, and get your money back.

If that is the case, then the restoration shop should get a cut when it is sold for their work. If they don't, could be a lawsuit in the making. It isn't right that anyone should make a mint off the van and the people who made it so get nothing.

But then the law and the courts don't always seem to worry about what is fair or right. Obviously the insurance company shouldn't be out their money either, now that it has been found.

I wonder if it was titled in California? I found out awhile back that if a vehicle goes more than 3 years unregistered in any way in Cali it is purged from the data base. That could explain how it got a clean title through the years.

I got quiet an education getting a title on a vehicle that had not been registered in the state for 7 years and sold twice in that time frame. Got a clean one from my state in the end. Crazy system.
