Puppy mills are sad places.

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Puppy mills are sad places.

If you want to get a dog, do not get it from a pet store. Most pet store dogs come from puppy mills......

find a breed you like and look for a local rescue group for that breed...

I NEVER recommend pet store pups or kittens to my clients. Most of the problems I see in young animals are in ones that come from pet stores or flea markets. I'm a big believer in rescue groups or the pound/shelter. Most of my personal cats are from the pound and the others were strays.

Our last two cats were rescued cats from the animal shelter. The former one lived 16 happy yrs in a loving home - otherwise she would have been destroyed. When she passed, we went back to the shelter to get another cat - she too is living quite happily in our hope for the past 4 yrs

I honestly can not watch the Animal Channel shows that show abused animals. It just breaks my heart the way some people treat animals.

Oh, I did. But I read the title first and immediately thought....CD. Then I looked over in the author column and saw "Arne". Nothing against you of course Arne, it's just that CD's sig line reads: "Don't support puppy mills. Adopt! Don't shop."

ditto.

You share the same worthy cause with him Arne. CD's signature line is a direct hit on this matter too.

Not just pet stores, but also beware of "breeders" who have websites and will ship a pup to you.

Yea, we have 4 pets now, and 3 were adopted...

there was that time 30 years ago, one Friday night late...well, alcohol was involved...I bought a Chow Chow at the pet store. I woke up Saturday with a slight headache and a Chow licking me in the face... ;) I still miss that dog...

Why is it that whenever I hear the message to have your pets spayed or neutered I think of Bob Barker?

I came from a puppy mill, and look how I turned out. :(

That should be warning enough.

But seriously, in my family, we always get shelter dogs. My last dog Casey came from a pet store, but it was one where the dogs were actually shelter dogs up for adoption -- the store made it's money off of pet supplies and grooming, and displayed shelter dogs as a public service.

The Pet's Mart near me does something similar. They often have shelter or foster dogs at the store on weekends.

What puppy mills do to the "breeder" dogs is immoral.
