Anybody else making Christmas presents this year??

Postby Larwyn » Sat Dec 12, 2009 3:23 pm

Last year all the handmade Christmas presents that I made were form my welding shop so this year I decided to do something in the woodworking shop.

For my little nephew William;

A game for all the adults (there are half a dozen of these things) all I did was the triangles of oak, my wife Lanza melted all that glass and formed it into the game pegs you see here. My woodwork does not do her art justice;

and I decided to use up a little scrap wood on a couple of these (some "well balanced wine");

and finally there's one left over steel wine holder from last year, I made several of these;

Larwyn-
Beautiful gifts! Back when I was a young newly wed with no money, I tried to make every gift for Christmas. My parents still use a tablecloth I made. It is red with white snowflakes embroidered all over. I thought I would never get done with it.
This year I've made a few quilts. Well, really just the tops. I send them out to be quilted. And our 4 year old has been making ornaments, with some help from our 18 year old.
I love to get handmade gifts. My kids are not very crafty however. Maybe one of these days.

I think that's wonderful, Larwyn. Crafted with skill, and love...you can't beat that. I'm a decent baker, so I tend to stick with that. Haven't met too many folks who can pass up homemade cookies. Pizzelles are my latest creation, so will be baking mountains of those and other Christmas goodies to package up for friends and family.

With my husband's family, we do a grab bag thing for Christmas. Each of the adults buys one gift, and we all take turns picking a gift from the pile of wrapped gifts on the table. If I didn't think I'd get laughed at, I'd suggest that next year, we each make our gift. But I realize that just because I think it'd be fun and have time to do that, not everyone is in the same boat.

Springerle cookies sitting out for 24 hours before baking. It took six batches and three recipes to get them the way I wanted.

Ah, springerle. I was set to add springerle to my repertoire last year, as both my and my husband's family are of German descent, but the springerle molds aren't cheap (at least the authentic-style ones I was looking at), so I haven't tried it yet.

They are absolutely the most beautiful cookies...yours look so wonderful, Dennis! I must make some, for they are magical... :SG

I purchased the molds from http://www.itcwebdesigns.com/cmindex1.htm They were reasonably priced.

Good general Springerle information here http://www.thespringerlebaker.com/index.html

Thanks for the info, Dennis...I missed that site the first time around. They have beautiful molds. And a seahorse, no less! Now I have to make springerle. Happy baking!

What wonderful gifts! Next year, I'm going to have to plan ahead, and try making some gifts. I do make "puppy chow" for all of the employees at work. They always love it. :)
