Annoying computer gliche...

Postby Micro469 » Mon Dec 21, 2009 9:14 am

I realize it's just a small problem, but wondering if anyone here can tell me how to fix it. I have two computers, and one works fine. The other one...a new build, I use connected to the T.V. to watch hockey not available on cable.
Anyway, this computer has both Internet Explorer and Firefox. Firefox works fine, but the problem is with Explorer...or should I say my Homepage. I set it to MSN.com for the US page but it keeps loading the UK page. I can't seem to get it to load the US page no matter what I type into the options area. There must be a setting somewhere I'm missing....... The computer is set to language US, and country Canada.....

So Why does the MSN UK always load????

ANYBODY???? :? :? :?

You might try setting it to USA and see if it works that way.

Open what page you want the home page to be, click on tools in internet explorer, click on internet options. In the general tab, click "use current" then hit "OK". That should set your homepage in explorer to whatever you want. It really should not matter what country you used during setup. I am running Windows 7 w/internet explorer 8, so I hope this will work for you.

You're right, that should work, but when I open up www.msn.com, it should go to the US page, but it goes to the UK page. When I go to the US page and click use current, and then reboot, and open Explorer, it goes back to the UK page........ :x :?

I am not much of a Windows person, but I got this nifty little netbook with XP on it. I hope that I can help. You mentioned that you have the country set to Canada and language US. You can set the language in two places in the Windows Control Panel.

The first one is the Regional and Language Options and is what I am guessing the first place you looked:

The second one is particular to Internet Explorer called Internet Options:

When I went to MSN.com with IE, I got this popup, so I would agree with others that it could also be a cookie.

Anyhow, if you do resolve it, let us know how.

ooh....I clicked on 'click here for help with this popup' and this came up:

[quote]

Q: Why do I still see the pop-up asking me if I am looking for my local MSN site after I've selected "Always take me to <local> site"? Or "I know where I want to go, don't show this again"?

A: There can be many possibilities for experiencing this behavior:

1. You have cookies disabled in the browser (Block or allow cookies)

2. You clear your cookies upon closing the browser (How to reset Internet Explorer settings)

3. There is another application running that is modifying your cookie settings, for example an adware program or similar application (How to reset Internet Explorer settings)

Q: How can I view the U.S. homepage (www.msn.com) without seeing the pop-up?

1. Click “Always take me to MSN U.S.â€

I would also check the host file it is in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
the file is named hosts and has no extension.

the default file looks like this:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

If there is a bunch of entrys below the # signs these are used to redirect your computer to a new location or to tell the computer where to look for a computer in stead of using dns. Lately it has been used by trojan viruses to redirect you to another site to steal your private info. You want to make sure there are no extra entrys and write protect the file. This will only slow them down.
