Ford Ranger

Postby Woodyperk6 » Thu Dec 31, 2009 9:49 am

My son has a 2000 model Ranger with a 3.0 V6. Earlier this year it blew the oil pan gasket out on the right side of the engine. We pulled the engine & replaced the oil pan gasket. We replaced the PCV valve & checked the system to make sure it was working properly. About 6 to 8 weeks after we had the truck running it again blew the oil pan gasket out on the right side. Does anyone have any thoughts ideas or answers to this problem? I don't want to pull the engine again until I know for sure what the problem is. Thanks

It shouldn't unless you have a blower or other forced air device. Did you check to make sure there isn't a crack or warped oil pan. Did you use a good gasket sealer. Also over tight bolts can cause the pan gasket to crack or if too much sealant can push out. Is the truck running hot? is the gasket cork or rubber. Did you check and see if the bolts where still tight. Did the gasket actually blow out or just crack.

He doesn't have a blower or any other forced air device. When I had the pan off before I cleaned it up really well and did not see any signs of damage or cracks in the pan. The first time the gasket blew out it was on the right front corner of the pan. This time it blew out about half-way down the right side. The truck is not running hot & does not smoke or burn any oil. I used a 3M gasket sealer I have used many times over the years. The gasket is a rubber gasket from Ford that has metal inserts in the bolt holes so I don't think I crushed the gasket out. The pan bolts are still tight. I'm kinda at a loss right now.

 Just a dumb girl question but are you suppose to use sealer on rubber? Really I am asking. Might have to do mine soon. :(

Uh why did you pull the engine? Couldn't you just lift it?

Sounds like the crank case is building pressure to me. Have you checked the hoses for the pcv valve? It may be plugged.
Aunti M, I've used silicone sealers on rubber gaskets before with no problem.

I would do a leak down test and compression test. You might have a bad piston ring.

Hi woody, I have a 78 Ford F250 4x4 , have had it from new. I rebuilt it 3 times now. It has been parked sense the price of gas went up, 8-10 mpg ha. Anyways, I found this site on Fords that is just like this one, good people that are a lot of help. If you go on they have all the Ford years in different forums. A real easy site to get around on. If you sign up you will miss most of the adds they have on the sides. Hope this helps you out. Erv

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm going to do a cylinder leakage test later this week when I find time to work on it.

Kinda odd.. I've seen the rear main seals fail often. Is there a chance someone is overfilling the crankcase with oil? Windaged oil will blow a lot of things.

Woody, I have access to a Ford service bulletin that outlines a procedure for replacing a blown oil pan gasket. It says to use a one-piece neoprene gasket that has some "fingers" made into it to keep the gasket from "creeping" out. I saw you used a Ford gasket in your repairs so I would think you got the right one.

PM me your email address and I'll forward the SB to you. Sounds like you are doing the right thing so I don't know what is causing the problem  ............

It seems yo are building up pressure in the pan. Could it be that the piston rings are bad?

I don't know too much about engines, just what happens to mine.....

Aren't there oil channels in the block to bring oil up into the head to lubricate the valves etc? could they be blocked ?
