Helping Haiti Earthquake Victims and Avoiding Scams...

Postby caseydog » Wed Jan 13, 2010 11:30 pm

Haiti is a very poor country, and the 7.0 earthquake has caused massive destruction and injuries -- and a lot of deaths.

The need for donations is very high, and of course, the vultures know this, and are making up scams by the minute.

DO NOT respond to emails asking for money. Do some homework and choose respected and audited charities to give to.

Please help, but be smart. Check out Charity.org for ratings of legitimate charities. http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.c ... &cpid=1004

I gave through https://re.clintonfoundation.org/SSLPage.aspx?pid=3869 . They have a high rating for getting money to programs, and having very low overhead and fundraising costs -- less than 5-percent. You can choose to have your donation go to relief efforts. Some charities let you do that, while others put your donation into a "general fund." Something to think about.

No matter what you choose to do, just be careful. Make sure your money goes to saving lives and rebuilding a devastated nation, and not into the pockets of scammers who use tragedy to make themselves rich.

Again, scammers are working overtime to take advantage of your sympathy and generosity. By all means, GIVE, but be careful.

A good & timely reminder CD. I've heard about several of these scams on the radio today. A person wants their donation to go where it's needed not in some scammers pocket.

I gave using Google Checkout. We chose Unicef, since we have Kids.
