california tire inflation

Postby hugh » Mon Jan 18, 2010 10:21 am

I was just reading how in California CARB may soon require testing of tire inflation. They are still discussing it but if it is enforced and you take your vehicle in for repair they must check the tire pressures and document it. If the garage offers the service for free you won,t be able to refuse and along with the other stipulations they are talking about a $1000 fine, and they don,t trust the owner's word on it.

I imagine that it never went through but found it slightly disturbing and hilarious at the same time.

This is just asking for jokes.
The following isnt a joke, but sometimes facts are funnier:

This resolution was adopted by "The California Air Resources Board"

I believe that there has also been talk about restricting certain colors of cars to be sold here as they require more energy to cool.....we here are sooooo screwed. When tires are underinflated, only outlaws will have underinflated tires. Doug

I agree!

While driving remains to this day a "privilege" and not a "right", it amazes me how people still take for granted the responsibility and operation of a motor vehicle.

Tires are almost living things and do need consistent monitoring... yet many people (in my daily observation as a professional driver) neglect the care and feeding of their tires.

I was wondering when I would be seeing those "Green" jobs!!! But ithey say that the regulation will annually

•Eliminate 700,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions;
•Reduce the state's fuel consumption by 75 million gallons; and,
•Extend the average tire's useful life by 4,700 miles.

Now...we need a law that if you have an electrician work in your house, they have to certify that you have all compact flourescent bulbs!!!

interesting.. people take cars for granted, until they break down, often from maintenance neglect... I'm 'almost' in favor of this, as it can cause an over heated tire and a blowout, bad windshield wipers, headlights out (I check mine all the time against the garage door at night)... as we get more congested, it behooves all of us to be more aware of how we might affect ourselves and others.

When Ford had the rollover problem, often it was enhanced by under inflated tires.

quote: As set forth below, tire manufacturers often argue that consumers are to blame for tread separation because they drove on underinflated tires. According to the manufacturers, driving on underinflated tires generates excessive heat and results in tread separation.

If Ford recommended an excessively low tire pressure, it may share liability with Firestone for tread separation failures. Indeed, it would be disingenuous for Firestone or Ford to blame consumers for driving on underinflated tires when Ford effectively recommended that they do just that.

Is that so they can collect more money to dispose of them??? I know in Washington you are not supposed to put them in the garbage, you need to recycle them as haz-mat.

As a side note, when I purchased my house 3 years ago, I swapped out every bulb I could to CFL. I have already hade to replace 1/2 of them. the one room that did not get changed is on a dimmer switch and I have never replace the incandesent bulbs and they get used daily. Go figure. Some of my light will be changed to LED next time the go out.

The following is my opinion:

People should be driving on properly inflated tires. Better economy, tires last longer, safer. BUT, The idea that there should be a law ... what the #%&@ are we thinking folks. :x Laws don't fix anything. EDUCATE yourselves!! If you or someone you trust isn't checking your oil, water, battery, air pressure, power steering, brake fluid, etc. etc. on a REGULAR basis you aren't taking care of your car, your safety, your passenger's safety, or the safety of the stranger(s) coming the other direction on the highway. Once the importance of these things is understood, the proper action is obvious. It isn't difficult. Any person competent enough to be behind the wheel can do it. The only thing that a LAW accomplishes is to give the government a reason to watch what you're doing, take your hard-earned money, and change what you're doing if they don't agree with you. Meanwhile you've lost the right to make that decision for yourself.

The same goes for CFL lights, solar power, wind power, electric cars, (the list is endless) ... when it makes sense to use them, use them. When it doesn't, don't. Don't go out and pass a @%&*& law.

People, in general, are intelligent and with a little education can make appropriate decisions for themselves and they should do so ... on their own. Be responsible ... take care of your little part of this world and let everyone else take care of their part. All of a sudden, the whole world is better.

I'm sorry ... but the world isn't made out of bio-degradable NERF and the government can't and won't be right there to take you by the hand every time you want or need something. I/We don't want it, nor can we AFFORD it. $>

whats nice is now we have cars with satellite linkups, just think with the new patriot act laws in place the government can legally "check in" on you and your car, pretty soon they will just mail you a fine wether they stopped you or not.. Sarcasm but big brother is watching......

this is just one of many proposed CARB regs being put into effect over the next few years. You should see the stuff on commercial trucks. Mandated vehicle age restrictions, mandated tire types & aerodynamics, on and on. I can see much of it being passed on to all vehicles once the enforcement agencies get all set up. Crazy stuff.

You can't fix STUPID!

Postby eamarquardt » Tue Jan 19, 2010 12:56 am

You can't legislate away STUPID. All you're gonna do is create another govermental agency, suck up more taxpayer dollars, and not change a friggen thing!!!!!!! I recently saw a list of the governement agencies in California. IT WAS OBSCENE! The simple fact is that once they create a new "agency" there is no getting rid of it.

I agree that you the governments can get/encourage manufacturers to build more areodynamic vehicles, better tires, cleaner more efficient engines, etc. but you gotta draw the line somewhere and managing the tire pressure in a bazillion vehicles on the road is on the wrong side of the line.

Cheers,

Gus

It does give the driver someone else to blame other than him, (sometimes) if he has an accident because of under-inflated tires. Essentially, that's all the 'agency' that is needed with this law, to ensure the mechanics check and maintain tire pressure when the vehicle is in the shop. The shop owner will not want to be blamed if the driver has an accident right after he leaves the mechanic's garage.
