Anyone following the 24 Hours of Lemans?

Postby caseydog » Sat Jun 12, 2010 12:49 pm

Yeah, it's not NASCAR, but it is my favorite race.

I don't have SpeedTV on my satellite package, but I found a live feed online, and I have an iPhone app that covers the race.

Any other Lemans fans on the forum?

Without cable I don't even get Nascar, let alone LeMans. I'm waiting for the days of the 917's and all the big beasts to come back.......but that won't happen.

They used to do the 24 hrs of Nelson Ledges right up the road, amazing how you can sleep with all the noise and excitement. Yet I can't sleep in bed when it's quiet--go figure.

I've been solving tongue design problems on my new tear chassis today... but, tomorrow we're going to watch F1 from Canada (even though FOX coverage of F1 sucks) and whatever SPEED wants to broadcast from the Circuit de la Sarthe.

As for the 24 hrs, the new stuff doesn't hold my interest like the cars that raced 30 yrs ago did. Granted, the diesels are tech marvels but with chicanes on the Mulsanne, no Ford or Ferrari prototypes and no flipping Mercedes', it just ain't the same...

It was pretty awesome this year. The fastest ever.

The underdog swept the podium with cars that didn't break, while the fastest four cars in qualifying all blew up. To win at Lemans, you have to be fast for 24 hours, not just qualifying.

In GT2, there was a hell of a race between the factory Corvettes and the Risi Competizione Ferraris for the first six hours, but in the end, the winner was the venerable Porsche 911 GT3RSR.

GT1 and P2 classes were kind of "who cares" classes -- the real action was in P1 and GT2.

Bitchin'! That's one of my favorite cars of all time.

I'm not normally a "coupe" guy because most modern coupes feel cramped; seems like I'd rather drive a high-performance, roomy sedan. The Focus is one exception; there's just enough room, the visibility is great and the driving dynamics rewarding.

But the Porsche GT3... I'd piss myself if given the opportunity to own a road-going version.

So what was the fallout from when so-and-so took out the leading car at 20 hours?

The lead Peugout that went out at 20 went out on an engine failure. The first Peugout to exit was a frame break at the rear suspension. The other three went from engine failures late in the race.

The GT3 is a nice ride. I drove a 2010 GT3 RS a few weeks ago. Perfect handling, and the ride was not too harsh to use around town.

The GT3 RSR is a factory built race car Porsche builds and sells to private teams, like the one that won today.

I was watching it last night.... late last night, I don't know if it was live or what. I watched right around when one of the Ferraris went onto the run off area with locked up front tires.

I also saw the interview with the Peugeot driver who passed the Corvette which then crashed. Mind you, I'm no Corvette fan, but the Peugeot driver was kind of an a$$. I was thinking, you have all kinds of areodynamic aids and you are complaining about a GT car in the turns? It was funny because the commentators repeated the same thing. Lots of carnage in the race.

I was watching on Speed and the commercials were driving me nuts, seemd like they had a break every 5min. I quit watching after an hour or so.

Yeah, since SpeedTV is owned by NASCAR, it seems that all racing other that NASCAR is lower priority. But, they are the only ones covering Lemans in the US.

I watched the feed at Speed.com when available, but they cut it off anytime it was on SpeedTV, so I had to watch the ending after the fact.

I love sportscar racing and WRC rally racing, but here in the States, everyone else seems to prefer family cars racing in circles and crashing a lot. :o

So, I've gotten used to settling for weak coverage of the kind of racing I like.

Missed it this year

I go back to the glory days of the GT40's, onto the 917's and Ferrari 512's, 935's and 936's

Anything prior to the 962's

Andretti, Hill, Ickx, McLaren, Foyt, Rindt...etc. etc.

Boy am I dating myself here

Hey, a 917 can be yours for only 2.25 million. :D
