On the road

Postby timlsalem » Wed Aug 25, 2010 9:01 pm

I'm halp way through Nebraska tonight. Only problem I've had is this trailer bounces all over. Any little bump, dip, or anything else like horizontal lines accross the road and it feels like I'm in a truck. Bounces my guts out. Think I'll stop tomorrow before night and plan to stay there till I move my axle back a little. I think that's my problem. The trailer looks like it's balanced pretty good. I'm not sure what is causing the bouncing. Could be where the axle is or could be the springs in the trailer or, could be too light on the tongue. Just don't know. Antone having the same problem?

yes, you might want to redistribute the weight... I cant see your trailer or how its loaded but it might be goofy.. Ive gotta load mine a bit heavy in the back because of how its designed but it tows like a dream, even at 100+ mph (not that we would ever endorse that )

+1 on what Paul said. Try that first, it's easy and can often make a big difference. Also make sure your tires aren't over inflated for the load.

Don't know anything about your trailer but I lower the tire pressure to keep mine from bouncing so much. My trailer weighs in about 750 lbs. I run about 18 psi. NOTE: this is not a recommendation. Just what works for me.

if its the red trailewr in your pic album it might be too heavy in the back depending on how its loaded..
There is a stretch of interstate 94 near fergus falls minnesota that will pound the snot out of my pickup and boat, its just how the road was built. the only way i can get away from it is to slow way down for those 10 miles or so. Its miserable and i know its not my rig, its the road... good luck!

I lived in Nebraska for a few years, some of the lesser highways will about make you sick. I would go with load distribution and tire pressure changes before I relocated the axle.

I saw a good formula for guesstimating tire pressure,

Max tire pressure, divided by max tire load, multiply by half trailer weight.

So, assuming a tire with a 400lb load rating, at 32psi and a 2000lb teardrop,

32psi/2000lbs=0.016
2000lb/2tires=1000lb/tire
0.016x1000lbs=16psi

so in the above example, 8psi would be a ball park tire pressure range.

Please note, the numbers in my example are just that, an example, and were chosen to make the math come out in nice easy to work with numbers, no long never ending decimals.

I could be tire pressure, I don't know. I have 55 LBS in them. They say max 80 LBS for a full load. So maybe I'll take them down to 30 PSI and see what happens.

I have auto tires on mine initially tried 33psi and it was too bouncy. Now I run at 25psi.
