Does anyone do leatherworking here? (Pics added)

I'm curious as to what kind of tools it takes to do this. Now, I'm not going to make studded-leather sex clothes or anything like that. Just interested in making knife and axe sheaths. I bought a tomahawk last week (thanks, TwilightLane for that one....... hee hee) and it didn't come with a sheath. Well, it did but a clear plastic one won't cut the mustard for me. I have a Gransfors axe that came with one and it is very nice but I'd like to dabble in this craft if it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

For knife and axe sheaths about all you would need is a sewing awl, hole punch and copper burrs. Use heavy thread and beeswax for stitching or leather lace if you want fancy. have fun! Will

Believe me, the studded leather sex clothes take much less in the way of tools and skill than building an almost decent saddle. For what you want to do, all you need is a way to cut, sew, dye and finish the edges. Tandy used to be a good source for such information, probably still is.

Here you go Jeff . The sheath is real plain and you can costumize any way you want.

Jeff,
I dabbled with leathercraft back in high school...
Rushed right in to it and bought all sorts of dyes for texturing, but I gotta tell yaa, one of the coolest things I found for making an intersting texture was a sidewalk... Laid a belt blank down on an old sidewalk and hammered the texture of the sidewalk into the leather. Dyed the highs and left the lows natural. Really looked awesome and borrowing a sidewalk didn't cost me a cent.

Alright, alright, alright.......... thanks to Ernie (paisano) and Jim (corncountry) I'll be in the leathermaking business soon  . Jim brought me a whole box of leather scraps last weekend at the Crawford Gathering so when I got home on Sunday I cut out a pattern for the tomahawk that I got when TwilightLane turned me onto them...........Ernie sold me a whole set of tools for a little bit of nothing so hang on, folks!!

Do you see how this forum is FULL of enablers    ....... I'll post some pics as the project progresses.

I finally got a sheath made for my tomahawk........

I think it turned out pretty good. The first one I made didn't look right. I WAS making a sheath for Loader but it fit mine so well I decided to keep it for myself. I'll craft one for him that looks just like mine but it'll need to be just a bit bigger since his cutting edge is about 1/2" longer.
