Putting Up 65' Tower

Postby Bigwoods » Sun Oct 03, 2010 9:45 pm

Because we live in the sticks, I have to put up a 65' tower to receive high speed. We have had dsl for a year, but it is getting weak, hence the tower. My friend is giving me the tower and said I need a concrete pad and guy wires. I'll run up to his place and look at the base to check it out.

Any ideas of how big the concrete base should be and how many guy wires? Maybe I should just hire it done, but I like to save here and there. I'm sure me and my buddies can get it erected properly.

Might even be able to add dish tv and get more than the 3 channels we sometimes get now. All this is because we love the 3000 trees around our house.

Could you just top a tall tree and install a dish in it? I've seen it done here. It does take a climber to do it though. Doug

Google is your friend here....There are some real specific rules to how high depending on where you are and if it needs lights and lots of other things. You will need a wire stretcher. I lost mine in the wind (only 30') because the wires weren't tight enough for 100mph wind.

Don't forget your grounding rod!

Oh and you might offer your cell phone company or anyone else using radios, use of your tower in exchange for putting it up... 8)

A GOOGLE check will do you well in this case - you could also check with your local HAM Operator Club- they can give you very good assistance in this. And I would bet that they would offer help in putting it up.

Have fun

65 ft. is a long way up. Be sure you use a good safety belt and are comfortable with working that far off the ground. It doesn't look like there's much to it but when you get to working aloft,it changes.Best of luck.

Thanks for all the advice. I am lucky that I have friends with the proper tools to do the job and a fella from our church used to install them for radios the farmers use. I fact he had installed this one several years ago.

So, after the harvest is done I think well give it a try.

I have a friend in Esko who used to work on radio towers. He has one in his yard. If you are interested Scott is an excellant resource. Kinda crazy because he loves climbing them! Now he is a firefighter.
