I have some vacation time...

Postby Creamcracker » Tue Nov 30, 2010 10:45 am

I have vacation time I need to take during the month of January 2011 but am having a hard time in coming up with any sort of destination....help me please...we live in Northern Virginia and would like to go somewhere that will be warmer....I won't be taking the teardrop and flying is out (can't be bothered with all the security)....ideally I'd like to be within a days drive from home. I looked at Branson but there doesn't seem to be much going on there during January. New Orleans...seems like the superbowl is on...so any suggetsions? any ideas? any favorite places to spend a week?

I'd pick Florida. In January it can't be beat. On the east coast there is White Hall and Viscaya, two of the most amazing homes ever built in the new world. And there are the John Deering Estate and about 100 other great museums.

Or the west coast from Sarasota to the Everglade City. Lots of history. Don't miss the Edison/Ford Estates and the Manatee museum.

Or the keys if your loaded with money. Key Largo is great laid back fun. Key West I guess would be fun if you're made of money and like nightlife. We aren't and don't.

Northern East cost of Florida has everything from space to the oldest home.

And not Florida but Savana, GA don't miss lunch at Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House. My life wasn't complete without that experience.

Savannah GA, Off season is better when trying to avoid a crowd. I can go there any time of year and have a good time. Lots of history there.

Or do a ghost tour... Stop at all the haunted places along any given route. Lots of that in Savannah, the Biltmore Motel in NC, etc.

You might want to check the average temps before you go. Branson is cold this time of year. 38* In Joplin now.

Not real sure how you get here in one day anyway. Manassas is an 18 hour trip for me, but I go through Roanoke.

If you don't want to fly get on a boat. I know there are some cruises out of Norfolk to Bermuda. There are some deals going on now because of the economy.
:icedtea: Sitting on a sunny beach would be warm.
