winning a bet question

Postby Forrest747 » Sun Jan 02, 2011 11:21 am

I don't gamble. I understand points spread and all but I had a question. In the TCU Wisconsin game a friend had Wisconsin winning by 3. Now Wisconsin lost by two but my friend still won. I'm confussed. Thanks for keeping the laughter to a minimum

That's the exact reason I don't gamble--I'm not smart enough.

TCU was actually favored so your friends' bet must have been for Wisconsin to lose by no more than three points. They only lost by two points so he wins the bet.
The terminology would be to take Wisconsin and three or to take TCU and give three which means if you took TCU they would have to win by at least three points to win the bet. If you had TCU you would lose the bet since they only won by 2.

Thanks more sense now and I'm glad that only food was bet. The way she explains is. He took Wisconson with a 3 point gap. Meaning that you can add 3 points to wisconson. For the final score.

The sports book confuses me. That's why I stick to craps. ;)

So, how do you figure the vig?

The vig or "vigorish" is the house commission on the bet, usually about 10%. So if you want to bet $10 on Wisconsin you pay $11 for your betting slip and collect $20 if you win. If you bet on TCU you would pay $11 for your $10 betting slip and get nothing back. The house collects $22 and pays out $20 to the Wisconsin fan making 10% ($2) on the action. The point spreads are designed to try to even out the betting, not an actual prediction of the outcome of the game. This is all assuming that the betting is done at a legal sports book.

If you bet correctly, craps has the lowest vig.
