I owe a beer to my guardian angel

Postby Weirdnerd » Sat Feb 05, 2011 11:29 pm

Today I drove six hours in a blizzard to get home, on the way, I hit a patch of black ice, did a beautiful 720 at highway speeds, careened out of control into the median and slid sideways for 100 feet, I am lucky as hell I did not end upside down...I love my Toyota.

I told the sweet version to my wife...she doesn't need to know how close she came to be a widow today.

I am amazed at the infinite possibilities that black ice gives you when it takes traction off your wheels, I still don't understand how I didn't roll over, sagebrush covered in snow should have had stopped the sideways going wheels and make me meet Odin and the Valkyries. The truck is like nothing happened, not even a branch stuck in the chassis. It really was like something was keeping it straight up against the laws of physics.

I really need a beer.

:guzzle: :beerhat:

yeah black ice sucks I live within ear shot of the fire department and there are so many accidents from either ice or animals.
good thing you made it out safe ..... I still need as much input as I can get for my trailer ideas

Black Ice?

Postby eamarquardt » Sun Feb 06, 2011 12:34 am

Black Ice?

When fellow I know moved here from Pa. and saw the hill that I then lived on, he asked how we got up the hill in "winter".

The answer, of course, is that we have no "winter" here.

Cheers,

Gus

Thank God you're safe! We've had a "ground blizzard" and really bad conditions this past week in OKC and Tulsa ...

I'd buy you a stiff shot to go with that beer!

Glad your O.K. Black ice really sucks, you have NO control what so ever. At that point you're just along for the ride.

That is a ride I don't want to repeat, I dread the return trip this afternoon, last night we got four inches of snow, and where I go they had 16, I just hope they plowed it good and put lots and lots of sand on the road.

Song comes to mind....

Postby The Teardrop Nanny » Sun Feb 06, 2011 12:09 pm

The song by country singer Carrie U. comes with the phrase..".Jesus, take the wheel....." My mamma warned me once about black ice, but I never knew what she meant by that....until I did a 360 on a slight uphill incline in a 68 Dodge Dart and shook my head out at my incredible luck....going the same way but just a little further on up the grade.

WN, Glad you came out of it okay... better give your guardian angel a Ginger Beer cuz you never know when you might need one to come to your aid again..... :worship: Joanie

:applause: :worship: Hope you have a safe trip home. Got my Sentra out today and fishtailed all over the place. Too much deep slush to get in real trouble. Weird feeling though.

Good to hear you got a good story out of it and that's all.

The best description of black ice was, "...by the time you realize you don't have control of the car, you've been out of control for about 30 seconds..."

It's bad stuff.

On this subject here is a video clip of a motorcylist hitting an (unseen) patch of black ice and carrying on unharmed - after a twitch.

This isn't the Voyager that you have seen in the US but a British 'feet forward' - a motorcycle designed to work, not one designed to look like other motorcycles - http://www.voyager03.co.uk/.

And, yes, we do drive on the 'other' side of the road.
