This is a cool short story about VW cars being made.

The factory was built for the VW Pheaton, which was a complete flop in the USA. Americans just didn't see the value in a $80,000 VW.

National Geographic Channel did a series called, "Ultimate Factories." One of them was the Ferrari factory at Marenello. They went through the whole process of building a Ferrari 599GTB.

I got it on iTunes, and it was incredible.

Watch that video, and you can understand why they cost so much.

I've been in one - a very lovely car. It's odd that the Germans, who have a fairly equal and classless society, have this desire when they are rich to hide it. That's why Mercedes started the whole idea of deleting badges so you could drive the monster engine luxury model but still look just like the local taxi. The Phaeton was the extension of the same idea - you can either buy a Bentley, or you can buy a Phaeton that is almost a Bentley underneath a Passat body.

I guess it's like Cadillac offering the option to have a Chevy body instead....
