old car parts

Postby droid_ca » Mon Feb 28, 2011 1:16 pm

Hey all you old car restorers I'm trying to find out what this part is
I apologize for my terminology but I am stumped ok here goes
it's a tub that goes horizontal with the car they are usually color matched to the vehicle and as far as I can tell they are only on one side they appear to be about 6 to 10 inch diameter and about 14 to 30 inches long I'm not sure how they are attached maybe to the rain gutter but then again still not sure
thanks for the help I'm sure some one on here knows what I'm talking about

I have seen some of those early "air conditioners," but none have been color matched. Most have been either silver, or the same gold as in your photo.

And, they are more of a cylinder than a "tub."

And most attach to a side window, not the gutter. At least mine does.

There is also a Las Vegas company that makes chrome ones for low riders. I will have to find the info.

Yep. The ones I have seen hook onto the top of the side window, and you roll up the window as far as you can, and it cools through the gap.

They generally went on the passenger side, since that door didn't open as much.

They are designed to always have air "flow" by drivin down the road..SUM have a built in electric fan.

Mine is as NOS as they come and I use it on my VW bug. MINE hooks onto the rain gutter..can't open the door then.

Others have a rod that has a piece that slips into the bottom window channel..sorta a 90 degree angle piece that stabilizes it and keeps it from droppin down in transit.

There are MANY different brands and designs, but ALL are swamp coolers that hang from the window.

As has been stated..they are usually silver or gold in color. Otherwise they are "custom" painted to match the car..

Those are meant to hook to the top of the door. Not to the rain gutter. That way you can still open the door.
