Does anyone have a design for a home made camp oven? Maybe one to go on top of the stove or over a camp fire? I have a few ideas but would like to see some others before I make something that doesnt function.

Hard to beat cast iron dutch ovens.

Coleman makes a folding oven for about $70.00. They work well on a gas stove and can be used over a campfire with care.

As far as plans for making one just look at pictures of the Coleman and copy it.

If you have a cast iron dutch oven, then you have a camp oven. You can bake anything in a DO. :thumbsup:

That last one, a dedicated propane oven, looks like a good deal.

It looks almost big enough to really bake in.

They do great! There's a little learning curve to controlling the flame/temp as they don't have a thermostat but, a little attention & I learned pretty quickly. This was Sunday morning breakfast at Gunner Pool NF C/G in the Arkansas Ozarks couple of years ago. I've also cooked lotsa biscuits for the Saturday morning breakfast at the LCG's - along with cornbread to accompany the beanpot ;)

Academy's carrying a $169 propane stove with an oven and 2-burner cooktop.
Mopar's what my busted knuckles bleed, working on my 318s...

I have a Weber 100 grill. I also use it as an oven. I have baked bisquets, rolls, cakes and cookies. Works great.

Don't know of any way to broil a steak in the Coleman oven as the burner is on the bottom & underneath a 'flame shield'. I suppose you could use an accessory pan but it wouldn't be broiled, just baked, & the grease splatter might (probably would :shock: ) cause a little excitement if (when?) it caught fire. As for what all you can cook - anything you normally bake as long as it fits in the oven. I've baked everything from biscuits to corn bread, cookies, shepherd's pie, corn casserole, etc. Even 'heated' a couple of loaves of garlic french bread to go with Madjack's Cajun gumbo at the LCG. This thing is about as versatile as you want it to be... :thumbsup:

The Coleman folding oven works well on a propane stove baking for two. We have used it for biscuits and it packs away well.

I have a Coleman folding oven that I got at a yard sale many years ago. It folds up to about 2" thick so it's easy to pack. I also like that it has a temp guage so I don't have to guess.

Go for it Slow. Any of the 'external' ovens whether a 'stand-alone' propane, the folding Coleman ovens that set on your Coleman burner, a 'reflector' oven in front of a campfire, or even a dutch oven; all require a learning curve & some experimentation to discover the right 'heat source setting' to get the cooking temperature you want. Once you've mastered that it's a simple matter to cook the dish(es) desired. I've found that in my propane oven it pays to 'turn' the cooking pan a time or two during baking to get a more even 'brown'. Been several years since I scorched the bottom of the biscuits before the tops browned ;) . We've shared a breakfast of hot biscuits'n honey with nearby hiker/campers on numerous occasions over the years, always to effusive thanks for the meal & admiring comments on the TD. Nuthin' like fresh bread or other goodies hot from the oven to 'break the ice' with fellow campers, especially in remote/back country campgrounds.
