In this area, a couple years ago, people would sneak onto your front lawn at night and plant 50 or so of those pink birds. The idea was that, in order to get rid of them, you had to write a check to your local charity. It worked for a while and then died away....Don't know where the birds 'flew' to.

Growing up in the Military, we had a running gag for new NAVY families in the neighborhood..
The newest NAVY family got the pink birds... And they had to stay until a new family moved in..

All of the COs (Commanding Officers) were in on it, thus, if a family did not comply, the CO caught wind of it and came down hard on the new guy until the Flamingos were back in place. There were always 2 of them.

I just observed a Graduation in our town and the lawn was decorated with about 60 of the pink plastic critters.

I bought my wife about a dozen of them for her 50th birthday. Every time we camp, a couple of them go with us. The rest guard the front yard.
