New use for hot attic

Postby starleen2 » Thu Jul 28, 2011 7:14 pm

With this heat wave hitting Texas hard - I found a new use for the attic. The A/C repair person came today and fixed the blower motor in the unit - which happens to be in the attic. He took a temperature reading in the attic 160* - wow! That's close to what I bake Coleman founts to harden the paint (I bake them at 170*) So today I put a few freshly painted founts in the attic to harden ;)

Ya just might want to add an exhaust fan in the attic for when ya aren't baking fonts. :x

Cool idea.

On a related thought, I have been tossing around the idea of putting a radiant barrier in my attic to keep down the heat.

We put a radiant barrier down a few years ago and it makes a big difference. Just some advice... do it yourself. We had a company that wanted over $3,000 to do it, and we ordered the material ourselves and did our house and her mothers house for about $500, and it took about 2 hours per house.

What exactly is a radiant barrier?

Okay, I just read the link. So, you staple it to the roof rafters? Do you have to cover all of the roof area? My vaulted ceiling "vaults" up into the attic and I couldn't get over that area.

I was thinking of doing it myself once the heat wave dissipates. You noticed a significant difference in cooling bills?

Now If I cool the attic down - then I'll have to go to the old method of baking founts in the oven. Oven baking of founts @ 170*+ new oven= angry spouse :x

With what you save in cooling costs, you could buy an oven to put the garage "for lantern use only"

I'm sure the material is about the same..... Yes, we have noticed a difference... it's worth the investment if you do it yourself....
